A desert is an area where there is little rain and almost nothing grows.
사막은 비가 거의 오지 않고 거의 아무것도 자라지 않는 곳이다.
But there is also another kind of desert — a food desert.
그런데 또 다른 종류의 사막이 있는데, 바로 식품 사막이다.
This is an area where there are few affordable places for people to shop for food.
이곳은 사람들이 식품을 살 알맞은 장소가 거의 없는 지역이다.
Ironically, in America, these food deserts are often found in the places where most of the nation’s food is grown.
역설적이게도, 미국에서 이 식품 사막은 전국 식품의 대부분이 재배되는 곳에서 종종 발견된다.
To deal with this situation, a government-supported nonprofit supermarket was created.
이 상황을 해결하기 위해, 정부 지원의 비영리 슈퍼 마켓이 만들어졌다.
Called Fare & Square, it is located in Chester, a small city in Pennsylvania that hadn’t had a grocery store for more than 10 years.
페어 앤드 스퀘어라고 불리는 이것은 10년 이상 식료품점이 없었던 펜실베이니아의 작은 도시인 체스터에 위치하고 있다.
Before Fare & Square opened, it was estimated that more than half of the city’s families had to travel long distances to purchase food.

Now, however, all of the city’s residents have easy access to the food they need.

The fight against food deserts is also taking place in another city.

The One Seed Chicago Project helps people living in the city by giving them seeds so they can start their own small vegetable gardens.
원 시드 시카고 프로젝트는 그 도시에 살고 있는 사람들에게 그들만의 작은 채소밭을 시작할 수 있도록 씨앗을 나눠줌으로써 그들을 돕는다.
These seeds can be planted in yards, local community gardens or even windowsills.
이 씨앗은 뜰이나 지역 사회 정원과 창턱에도 심을 수 있다.
By growing their own vegetables, people can eat fresh, healthy food without driving long distances to supermarkets.
그들만의 채소를 재배함으로써, 사람들은 슈퍼마켓으로 먼 거리를 운전해 가지 않고도 신선하고 건강에 좋은 식품을 먹을 수 있다.
Although these two projects won’t solve the problem of food deserts, they are the first step to assuring that all people can get healthy food, no matter where they live.
비록 이 두 프로젝트가 식품 사막 문제를 해결하지는 못하겠지만, 그것들은 그들이 어디에 살든지 모든 사람이 건강에 좋은 식품을 구할 수 있도록 하는 첫걸음이다.
