Can fish smell?

물고기는 냄새를 맡을 수 있을까?

The answer is yes.

대답은 ‘그렇다’이다.

A fish can smell through two or four openings in its head.

물고기는 머리에 있는 두 개 또는 네 개의 구멍을 통해 냄새를 맡을 수 있다.

These openings, called nares, act much in the same way as our noses do.

콧구멍이라 불리는 이 구멍은 우리의 코가 하는 것과 거의 같은 방식으로 기능한다.

In fact, some fish have a sense of smell that is 500 times more powerful than a human’s!

사실 어떤 물고기들은 인간의 후각보다 500배나 더 강력한 후각을 가지고 있다!

This strong sense of smell helps fish locate food, sense danger, or find their way home.

Fish can pick up even very weak smells in the water.

For example, sharks can smell blood from far away, even if there is only one drop of blood in a huge amount of seawater.
