Michael Beal, a professional soccer referee in England’s Premier League, tells us about his job.
What do referees have to do during a game?
The main job of a referee is to control the game.
We have to make sure the players follow the rules.
If they break the rules, we have to give a penalty.
Sometimes our decisions change the results of the game.
What are the good things about your job? Are there any bad things?
The best thing is I can watch soccer games closely.
This is fun for me because I really love soccer.
Of course, there are bad things too, such as stress.
Players, coaches, and fans yell at you and even attack you if they don’t agree with your decision.
But I think there are more good things about the job than bad things.
What skills does a referee need to have?
You have to understand the rules of the game.
That’s why there are many referees who used to be players.
Also, you need to be strong because you run throughout the whole game.
And finally, you have to be able to make decisions quickly about unexpected events.
How does someone become a referee?
Well, to be a professional referee, you must go to school.
A lot of training is necessary.
And in soccer, you need more than ten years of experience before you get a job in a national league.
Here are some tools used by soccer referees during a game:
Referees use the loud sound of a whistle to control the game.
A short whistle is used to show there was a simple foul.
A longer, louder whistle means there was a serious foul.
Long, loud whistles are also used when a goal is scored.
A watch is used to keep the time of a game.
Most referees use two watches.
One keeps track of how much time has passed and the other keeps track of time spent for injuries.
Yellow cards are used to warn players who break the rules.
Red cards are used to tell players that they’ve been thrown out of the game.
Referees flip a coin at the start of the game.
This decides who starts with the ball and which goal each team will defend.
Flags
깃발
Assistant referees carry flags.
They raise them in the air to show that the ball went off the field or that there was a foul.
For the past week, Mark has been staying up late every night working on a big company presentation.
He is so tired that he can barely keep his eyes open.
He used to like this job, but lately there is nothing he enjoys about it.
He’s starting to feel depressed.
This is an example of “burnout syndrome.”
Many people experience this when they work too hard for a very long time.
Since the mid-1970s, scientists have been studying about burnout so that they can help workers manage their stress.
Any job can cause stress, but are there certain jobs that really stress people out?
Yes! People who work closely with other people, such as teachers, nurses, and police officers, often report feeling burned out.
In addition, people with jobs that require them to work irregular hours are also at risk.
That’s why work environments are important.
When employees feel respected, motivated, and trusted, they enjoy their work more.
Also, bosses who can identify the signs of burnout will be better able to help those who have it.
Burnout is a serious condition, but it can be overcome through good communication and a strong support group.
Because of the stress of studying, even young students can experience burnout syndrome.
However, there are ways to prevent it.
First, it’s important to do tasks in the order of their importance.
This will help you manage your time well.
It’s also important to take some time for yourself.
During this time, you can relax, exercise, or even meet friends.
This will reduce your stress levels and help you to be more productive when you start studying again.
At first, you might feel guilty about not studying during this time.
However, without this free time, you could easily burn out.
A long time ago, there were no stamps or envelopes.
People would simply fold their letters, glue them shut, and have them delivered.
The person who received the letter had to pay for the cost of the delivery.
Since this was very expensive, many people didn’t accept the letters sent to them.
In fact, some people would even write in secret code on the outside of their letters.
This way, the other person could read their message without paying for it!
In 1837, the British Post Office decided to stop this kind of dishonest behavior.
To do so, they introduced a brand new system for sending and receiving letters.
In this new system, a person who wanted to send a letter had to pay before it was delivered.
To show that the letter had been paid for, the post office would glue a small piece of paper to the outside of the letter.
So, in 1840, the very first stamp was printed.
Because it was black and cost one penny, it quickly became known as the “Penny Black.”
In the early 20th century, tuberculosis was a terrible disease that affected many children.
In order to help these children, a postal clerk in Denmark came up with an idea.
He wanted to sell a special extra stamp for letters sent during the holiday season.
The money from these stamps could then be used to help sick children.
So, in 1904, the first “Christmas Seal” was created.
There was a picture of the queen of Denmark and the Danish word for Christmas on it.
That year, more than 4 million Christmas Seals were sold.
Soon, many other countries created their own Christmas Seals.
Today, they are found all over the world.
Have you ever eaten a delicious meal and then let out a big burp?
Your parents probably scolded you and said, “Don’t burp! It’s rude.”
But is it possible to stop a burp?
And what exactly is a burp, anyway?
Well, a burp is the sound of air escaping from your stomach.
To leave your mouth, it must pass a thin muscle at the back of your throat.
When air from your stomach rushes past this muscle...uh-oh... BURP!
There’s really no way to stop it!
So how does air get into your stomach?
Well, without knowing it, you usually swallow a liter of air every hour.
You swallow even more when you eat and drink.
So, burping is perfectly normal.
In fact, in some countries, it is polite to burp after eating to show your appreciation to the cook!
However, too much burping can be embarrassing.
But don’t worry! Here are some ways to burp less often.
First, don’t talk with your mouth full.
Talking and eating at the same time makes you swallow more air.
Second, eat slowly.
Eating fast pushes more air down into your stomach.
Third, stop drinking soda.
Since one can of soda has over 18 million air bubbles in it, drinking it may keep you burping for hours!
It’s not only humans that burp.
Cows burp often because they eat grass all day.
In fact, just one cow burps out around 150 liters of methane gas per day.
This is a problem because methane gas increases global warming.
It may surprise you to know that a group of cows produces as much methane gas as a family car.
So scientists are working on a new diet for cows that will reduce their burps.
They found that clover and other green leaves cause cows to burp less than grass does.
Luckily, cows love eating those, too!
