At school one day, Diana pointed to a new boy.
That’s Gilbert Blythe.
He just returned from visiting his cousins.
He’s handsome!
But be careful because he’s a big brat.
Soon, Anne saw Gilbert tie another girl’s hair to her chair.
“That’s mean!” thought Anne.
Then Gilbert tried to make Anne look at him.
But Anne was looking out the window.
She pictured herself taking a walk by the beautiful lake.
At that moment, Gilbert pulled her hair from behind.
“Your hair is the same color as carrots,” he laughed.
Carrots! Carrots!
당근!
Anne jumped from her chair.
“You are a mean, hateful boy,” she shouted.
Then—smack!—she broke her slate over Gilbert’s head.
All the students in the room were surprised.
Their teacher was very mad.
For punishment, Anne had to stand in the corner.
Gilbert tried to explain that it was all his fault.
But that didn’t matter to the teacher.
After class, Gilbert told Anne he was sorry.
Anne didn’t look at Gilbert.
She acted like she didn’t hear him.
Lucy Maud Montgomery, the writer of Anne of Green Gables, was born in 1874 in Canada.
After her mom’s death, Montgomery was sent to her grandparents’ home while she was still a baby.
Her childhood there gave her many ideas for Anne of Green Gables.
Her imagination grew as she played outdoors and listened to her grandfather’s stories.
Later she worked as a teacher but dreamed of becoming a writer.
Her character “Anne” was born in 1904, but no publishers were interested.
For years, Montgomery kept the story in an old hat box.
However, she always believed it would be successful someday.
Finally, in 1908, Anne of Green Gables was published.
Montgomery wrote many more popular stories about Anne.
Over a century later, Montgomery’s books still touch the hearts of millions of people worldwide.
You probably think zero is just a regular number.
But it is not like all the other numbers.
First of all, it was invented much later.
The numbers from 1 to 9 were invented thousands of years ago.
But the number zero was only created in the year 200 A.D.
Why was that?
It’s because the idea of zero is difficult to understand.
To understand zero, you must realize that it’s different from nothing.
Is that confusing?
Think about this example.
When you take a class, you get a grade.
If you don’t take the class, you get no grade — nothing.
But what if you take the class and do very poorly?
You could get a grade of zero.
Also, zero makes it easy to write large numbers.
Before zero, people put a space when they wrote one thousand six, like “1 6.”
Thanks to zero, we write one thousand six as “1,006” and can clearly see that it is different from 106 or 16.
Truly, zero is a very important number!
Roman numerals are numbers that look like letters from the alphabet.
In this system, I is used for 1, V for five, X for 10, L for 50, C for 100, D for 500, and M for 1000.
They were used throughout Europe until Arabic numerals were created.
While Roman numerals still appear today on things like clocks and calendars, they aren’t used for math now.
That’s because they are long and difficult.
And the reader must add all the letters to know the total number.
Take MMDCCXIII, for example.
This means 1,000+1,000+500+100+100+10+1+1+1, or 2,713.
Thank goodness math tests don’t use Roman numerals!
Are you a water lover?
I am.
I work at an aquarium.
My job is to take care of the fish and animals at the aquarium.
Each morning, I prepare food and feed the fish.
Usually, I dive into the tank four times a day and feed the large fish by hand.
While feeding them, I also watch for strange behavior.
If a fish moves slowly or isn’t interested in food, it can mean it has a problem.
It might be sick or stressed.
It’s also important to keep the water clean.
In an aquarium, bad water can kill the animals that live in it.
I also get to design the homes of my fish friends.
In fact, last week I created many tunnels and hiding places for them.
But the best part of my job is working with dolphins and seals for the show.
It’s fun to train them to roll over or jump into the air.
And I really love riding on the back of the dolphins!
In some ways, I am a mother, a doctor, a cleaner and a teacher to the creatures in the aquarium.

Harriet Tubman was born a slave in the American state of Maryland in 1820.
In 1849, she successfully ran away.
Soon after, she went back to Maryland and saved her family.
She returned many times and helped hundreds of slaves escape to the north.
Because of her actions, she became known as the “Moses” of her people.
When Tubman was a young child, she was beaten and whipped by her masters.
One time, her owner threw a heavy object at another slave, but it hit her instead.
It nearly crushed her head and left a deep scar.
The injury caused Tubman health problems for the rest of her life.
Slave owners offered money to anyone who could catch Tubman.
However, she bravely continued to help slaves become free.
Neither she nor any of the slaves she helped were ever caught.
Harriet Tubman will be the new face of the American $20 bill.
Tubman will be the first woman on the front of a US bill in over 100 years.
She will replace Andrew Jackson, the seventh president of the United States.
Jackson, who was a slave owner, will be moved to the back of the bill.
The new bill will not appear right away.
In fact, it may not appear until around the year 2030.
Still, people are very excited about the change.
They have praised Tubman’s courage and belief in equality.
