I’m Richard Turere, and I’m 13 years old.
My family lives next to magnificent Nairobi National Park in Kenya.
I look after the cows on our farm.
A few years ago, farmers like us had a problem.
Every night, lions wandered out of the park and killed our cows.
Farmers got angry and started killing many lions.
I decided to solve the problem.
At first, I tried using fires and scarecrows to scare away the lions.
But the lions were too smart to be scared of them!
Then one night I was walking around our barn with a flashlight.
No lions came.
I suddenly realized that lions are scared of moving lights.
The lights make them think people are around.
So I made solar-powered flashing lights and put them by the barn.
All night long, the lights flashed and tricked the lions.
They thought I was walking around the barn.
But I was actually asleep in bed!
I called my invention “Lion Lights.”
Now farmers all over Kenya are using Lion Lights to scare away lions, hyenas, and leopards.
Finally, there is peace between farmers and lions.
When babies are born too early, they have little body fat to keep them warm.
They are too small to regulate their body temperature, and this can lead to major health problems, such as heart disease or poor brain function.
However, such problems can be prevented by keeping premature babies warm.
That’s what incubators are for.
Unfortunately, the price of incubators and their electricity costs are too high for most developing countries.
Jane Chen, a young MBA student with a passion for healthcare, wanted to solve this problem.
She knew that hospital staffs and parents needed a low-cost solution that didn’t use electricity.
Chen had a smart but simple idea: the Embrace Warmer.
The Embrace Warmer is a tiny sleeping bag that keeps premature babies warm.
Embrace Warmer
There is a pouch of wax inside.
The wax melts at 37 degrees Celsius — human body temperature.
Users simply melt the wax with hot water and place it back inside the Embrace Warmer.
The Embrace Warmer can then keep a baby warm for four to six hours at a time.
Now this simple invention is keeping thousands of premature babies warm.
