Why do only humans have chins?

왜 오직 인간만이 턱을 가지고 있을까?

Apes such as chimpanzees are similar to humans in many ways, but they don’t have chins.

침팬지와 같은 유인원은 여러모로 인간과 유사하지만, 그들에게는 턱이 없다.

Scientists don’t know the exact reason, but they have some interesting theories.

과학자들은 정확한 이유를 알지 못하지만, 몇 가지 흥미로운 이론을 가지고 있다.

One theory is that the chin helps us speak.

하나의 이론은 턱이 우리가 말하는 것을 돕는다는 것이다.

According to this theory, the tongue needs some added force when we speak.

이 이론에 따르면, 말을 할 때 우리의 혀는 어느 정도의 더해지는 힘이 필요하다.

Some scientists think the chin provides this force.

어떤 과학자들은 턱이 이 힘을 준다고 생각한다.

However, the chin is actually too far from the tongue to give it force.

그러나, 실제로 턱은 혀에 힘을 주기에는 혀로부터 너무 멀리 떨어져 있다.

Plus, we don’t use much force when we speak.

게다가, 우리는 말을 할 때 그렇게 많은 힘을 사용하지 않는다.

Another theory suggests that the chin makes us more attractive to the opposite gender.

또 다른 이론은 턱이 우리를 이성에게 더 매력적이게 만든다는 것을 시사한다.

It is similar to how male peacocks impress mates with their feathers.

이것은 수컷 공작이 자신의 깃털로 짝에게 깊은 인상을 주는 방법과 유사하다.

Like the colorful feathers of male peacocks attract females, chins can be a feature that causes a person to choose a mate.

수컷 공작의 화려한 깃털이 암컷의 마음을 끌듯이, 턱은 사람이 짝을 선택하게 하는 요인이 될 수 있다.

Still, there is a problem with this theory.

그런데도, 이 이론에는 문제가 있다.

This kind of feature usually exists in only one gender, not both.

이런 종류의 특성은 보통 양쪽이 아닌 오직 한쪽 성별에만 존재한다.

A third theory says the chin helps us eat.

세 번째 이론은 턱이 우리가 먹는 것을 거든다고 한다.

Perhaps it helped our ancestors chew uncooked food.

아마도 그것은 우리 조상이 익히지 않은 음식을 씹는 것을 도왔을 것이다.

And it may have been passed down in our DNA even after we learned to cook.

그리고 우리가 조리하는 법을 알게 된 후에도 그것은 우리 DNA로 물려졌을지도 모른다.

This theory, however, is easy to prove wrong.

하지만 이 이론이 틀렸음을 증명하기는 쉽다.

Apes do not have chins but eat the same way our ancestors did.

유인원은 턱이 없지만 우리 조상들이 먹었던 것과 같은 방식으로 먹는다.

Despite these theories, the purpose of the chin remains a mystery.

이 이론들에도 불구하고, 턱의 목적은 여전히 미스터리이다.

Still, it is fascinating to study this unique feature that only humans have.

그런데도, 오직 인간만 지닌 이 독특한 특징을 연구하는 것은 매우 흥미로운 일이다.
