From Big Ben to the London Eye, London is home to a lot of great architecture.

빅 벤에서부터 런던아이까지, 런던은 많은 위대한 건축물을 보유한 곳이다.

One of the most unusual buildings in London’s skyline was completed in 2004, standing 180 meters tall with 40 floors.

런던의 스카이라인에 가장 특이한 건물 중 하나는 2004년에 완공되었으며, 40층짜리 180m 높이이다.

The building was given the nickname “the Gherkin” by Londoners because it looks like a pickle.

그 건물은 피클처럼 생겨서 런던 사람들에 의해 ‘Gherkin(오이 피클)’이라는 별칭이 붙여졌다.

In addition to the Gherkin’s unusual shape, its unique design has many practical features.

Gherkin의 색다른 형태에 더하여, 그것의 독특한 디자인은 많은 실용적인 특징들을 갖는다.

Firstly, its curved shape allows the wind to flow smoothly around the building.

첫째, 그것의 곡선 형태는 바람이 그 주변으로 부드럽게 불게 한다.

This reduces pressure on it and decreases the amount of strong wind for pedestrians near the building.

이것은 건물에 압력을 줄이고 그 건물 주위의 보행자들에게 부는 강풍의 양을 감소시킨다.

Secondly, its floor-to-ceiling windows capture natural light and lessen the need for artificial lighting.

둘째, 바닥부터 천장까지 이어지는 창문은 자연 채광을 담아내서 인공 조명의 필요성을 줄인다.

Thirdly, there are plans to add a new “green wall” to the Gherkin.

셋째, Gherkin에 새로운 ‘녹색 벽’을 덧붙일 계획이 있다.

Over time, plants such as grass will grow across parts of the building.

시간이 지나면서, 잔디와 같은 식물이 건물 일부를 가로질러 자랄 것이다.

This wall will provide shade and insulation for the building while reducing air pollution.

이 벽이 그늘을 제공하고 대기 오염을 줄이면서 건물에 단열 처리를 해줄 것이다.

With its innovative design, the Gherkin is expected to use up to 50% less energy than ordinary office buildings.

Gherkin의 획기적인 설계로, 일반 사무실 건물보다 최대 50%까지의 에너지를 절감할 것으로 예상된다.

Since its construction, the Gherkin has received a lot of attention because of its unique appearance.

건물이 건축된 이후로, Gherkin은 독특한 외관 때문에 많은 관심을 받아오고 있다.

But it’s clear that the building also has brilliant design features that work in harmony with its environment.

하지만 그 건물이 환경과 조화를 이루는 멋진 디자인적인 특징도 갖고 있는 것 또한 분명하다.
