Do you know how many finger muscles there are? Ten?

손가락 근육이 몇 개 있는지 알고 있는가? 열 개?

What if I told you there were none?

하나도 없다고 말한다면 어떨까?

Surprisingly, it’s true!

놀랍게도, 그건 사실이다!

Our fingers have no muscles, but they have tendons.

우리의 손가락에는 근육은 없지만, 힘줄이 있다.

Tendons are only connective tissue, so they can’t move any body parts by themselves.

힘줄은 결합 조직일 뿐이어서, 스스로는 어떤 신체 일부도 움직이게 할 수 없다.

How do our fingers move then?

그렇다면 우리의 손가락은 어떻게 움직이는 것일까?

The tendons in our hands are attached to the muscles in our palms and forearms.

우리 손에 있는 힘줄은 우리의 손바닥과 팔뚝의 근육에 붙어 있다.

The tendons connect these muscles to each finger bone.

힘줄은 이 근육들을 각각의 손가락뼈에 연결한다.

When we want to use our fingers, the brain sends a signal to a nerve.

우리가 손가락을 사용하고 싶을 때, 뇌는 신경에 신호를 보낸다.

Then, the nerve orders certain muscles in our palms and forearms to tighten or relax.

그러면, 신경은 우리의 손바닥과 팔뚝에 있는 어떤 근육에게 팽팽하거나 느슨해지도록 지시한다.

When a muscle tightens, the tendons connected to the muscle pull on specific finger bones.

근육이 팽팽해지면, 근육에 연결된 힘줄은 특정 손가락뼈를 당긴다.

This causes the finger to move.

이것이 손가락을 움직이게 한다.

However, the palm and forearm muscles are not divided evenly among the fingers.

그러나, 손바닥과 팔뚝의 근육은 손가락들에 균등하게 나뉘어 있지 않다.

The thumb, index finger, and little finger have extra forearm muscles.

엄지, 집게, 새끼 손가락에는 추가적인 팔뚝 근육이 있다.

This helps these fingers move independently of the other fingers.

그것은 이 손가락들이 다른 손가락들과는 독립적으로 움직이게 도와준다.

On the other hand, the ring and middle fingers share the muscle that moves all the fingers.

반면에 넷째 손가락과 가운뎃손가락은 모든 손가락들을 움직이게 하는 근육을 공유하고 있다.

So when they bend or straighten, the other fingers will do, too.

그래서 그 손가락들을 굽히거나 필 때, 다른 손가락들도 그렇게 된다.

This complex structure allows our fingers to do many amazing things, such as open doors, type emails, and play the piano!

이 복잡한 구조는 우리의 손가락이 문을 열고, 이메일을 쓰고, 피아노를 연주하는 것과 같은 많은 놀라운 일을 하게 한다!
