We all know that Earth is facing many ecological threats.

우리 모두는 지구가 많은 생태계적 위협에 직면해 있다는 것을 안다.

However, few people know that one of them is a lack of whale poop.

그러나, 그것들 중의 하나가 고래 배설물의 부족임을 아는 사람은 거의 없다.

According to marine biologists, whale poop is essential to fighting climate change.

해양 생물학자들에 따르면, 고래 똥은 기후 변화에 맞서 싸우는 데 필수적이다.

Unlike most marine animals, whales swim up to the surface to poop.

대부분의 해양 동물과는 달리, 고래는 배설하기 위해 수면 위로 헤엄쳐 오른다.

Their poop includes important nutrients such as iron.

그들의 배설물은 철분과 같은 주요한 영양소를 포함하고 있다.

As the poop falls to the sea floor, the iron in the poop helps the growth of tiny microorganisms called phytoplankton.

그 배설물이 해저로 떨어질 때, 배설물의 철분은 식물성 플랑크톤이라고 불리는 아주 작은 미생물의 성장을 돕는다.

In other words, the whale poop plays the role of natural fertilizer for phytoplankton.

다시 말해서, 고래 배설물은 식물성 플랑크톤에 천연 비료의 역할을 한다.

But how does the whale poop affect climate change?

그런데 고래 배설물이 어떻게 기후 변화에 영향을 미칠까?

When phytoplankton photosynthesize, they absorb huge amounts of carbon dioxide(CO2) from the air.

식물성 플랑크톤이 광합성을 할 때, 공기 중의 엄청난 양의 이산화탄소를 흡수한다.

According to a recent study, whale poop supports enough phytoplankton to take 400,000 tons of CO2 from the air every year.

최근의 한 연구에 따르면, 고래 배설물은 매년 대기로부터 400,000톤의 이산화탄소를 제거할만큼 충분한 식물성 플랑크톤을 부양한다.

This fact has increased the concern about whale hunting.

이 사실은 고래 포획에 대한 우려를 증가시키고 있다.

By hunting whales, humans have decreased the amount of iron-rich whale poop.

고래를 포획함으로써, 인간은 철분이 풍부한 고래 배설물의 양을 감소시킨다.

As a result, we have reduced the amount of phytoplankton available to remove CO2.

결과적으로, 우리는 이산화탄소를 제거할 수 있는 식물성 플랑크톤의 양을 줄여왔다.

This relationship shows how ecosystems work.

이 관계는 생태계가 어떻게 작용하는지를 보여준다.

When one part is endangered, the whole system is threatened.

어떤 한 부분이 위험에 처하게 되면, 생태계 전체가 위협을 받는다.

Now the need to protect whales seems clearer than ever!
