The Colosseum in Rome is maybe the most awesome of the city’s ancient sights.

로마의 콜로세움은 아마 도시의 고대 명소 중에서 가장 경탄할 만한 곳일 것이다.

Opened in 80 A.D, the Colosseum was where up to 50,000 spectators would go to watch events such as gladiatorial fights.

서기 80년에 문을 연 콜로세움은 최대 50,000명의 관중들이 검투 시합과 같은 행사를 보러 가곤 했던 곳이었다.

To watch the events, everyone had to have a ticket.

행사를 보기 위해서는, 모든 사람이 표를 가지고 있어야 했다.

Each ticket was marked with an entrance and a seat number to help people easily find the correct seats.

각 표에는 사람들이 쉽게 맞는 자리를 찾도록 돕기 위해 입구와 좌석 번호가 표시되어 있었다.

The Colosseum had 76 entrances for the general public, and each entrance was numbered.

콜로세움에는 일반 대중을 위한 76개의 출입구가 있었고, 각 출입구에는 숫자가 매겨져 있었다.

There were also four special un-numbered gates.

또한 숫자가 새겨지지 않은 네 개의 특별한 문도 있었다.

These gates were used by emperors and wealthy nobles.

Emperors could also get to the Colosseum from the Imperial Palace through a richly decorated tunnel.

The seats were arranged in the form of four tiers.

The spectators’ seating areas were based on their wealth, social status, and gender.

On the first tier was the emperor’s box, and it provided the best view of the arena.

Other members of the Roman political and social elite also sat here.

On the second tier sat the Roman upper class.

두 번째 줄에는 로마의 상류층이 앉았다.

The third tier was for ordinary Roman citizens, while women and the poor were in the fourth at the top of the Colosseum.

세 번째 줄은 일반 로마 시민들을 위한 곳인데 반해, 여성들과 가난한 사람들은 콜로세움의 꼭대기인 네 번째 줄에 있었다.

These systems suggest that the Colosseum itself was a reflection of Roman society.

이 체계들은 콜로세움 자체가 로마 사회의 반영이었다는 것을 시사한다.
