Water is rare in Manakhah, a mountain village in Yemen.

예멘의 산악 마을인 마나하에는 물이 드물다.

During the dry season, villagers travel long distances to gather water from reservoirs.

건기에는, 마을 사람들은 저수지에서 물을 얻기 위해 먼 거리를 이동한다.

This water is not clean, but the people are desperate.

이 물이 깨끗하진 않지만, 사람들은 절박하다.

Although there is very little rainfall in the village, there is always a lot of fog.

이 마을에는 강수량이 아주 적지만, 안개는 항상 풍부하다.

And fog is actually made up of water—it is a cloud of tiny water drops.

그리고 안개는 사실 물로 이루어져 있는데, 그것은 작은 물방울 구름이다.

For this reason, some organizations began trying to “harvest” the moisture from the fog to solve Manakhah’s water shortage.

이런 이유로, 마나하의 물 부족을 해결하기 위해 몇몇 단체들은 안개에서 수분을 ‘채집’하려는 노력을 시작하였다.

The organizations developed special nets that capture fog and turn it into water.

The nets look like volleyball nets and are made from fine nylon.

This material is effective in capturing water drops.

When fog passes through the nets, the tiny drops of water cling to them and gather together.

When the drops grow big enough, they drip into water tanks below.

Building a fog collector costs less than $15.

This is cheap enough for the people of Manakhah to set up hundreds.

Each net can collect more than 40 liters of water a day, which is enough for a family of seven to drink.
