For more than 130 years, Hawaiians from artists to Waikiki beach boys have learned to master their traditional musical instrument, the ukulele.

Although the ukulele is the most popular instrument in Hawaii, it actually has Portuguese roots.

In 1879, a ship named the Ravenscrag arrived in Honolulu, Hawaii.

They were immigrants who came to work in the sugarcane fields.

Fernandes’ playing impressed the Hawaiians who were listening on the beach.

They felt his fingers hopped like fleas across the instrument.

Therefore, they called the instrument a “ukulele,” the Hawaiian word for “jumping fleas,” and adopted it into Hawaiian culture.

Today, the instrument is still popular.

Although the instrument came from Portugal, it is now an essential part of Hawaiian culture.
