Imagine an ocean filled with millions of tiny lights.

It may sound like a fantasy, but it is reality!

Deep in our oceans, many sea creatures make their own light.

우리의 바닷속 깊은 곳에, 많은 해양 생물들은 각자의 빛을 만들어 낸다.

This ability to create light is called “bioluminescence.”

빛을 만드는 이 능력은 ‘생물 발광’이라 불린다.

Bioluminescence is caused by a special substance called luciferin inside a creature’s body.

생물 발광은 생물체의 몸 안의 루시페린이라 불리는 특수한 물질에 의해 일어난다.

This substance produces light when it is exposed to oxygen.

이 물질은 산소에 노출될 때 빛을 만들어낸다.

Bioluminescent creatures can control when they produce the light, and they use it for many different purposes.

생물 발광체는 언제 빛을 만들지를 제어할 수 있고, 그들은 여러 다양한 용도로 그것을 사용한다.

Anglerfish, for example, use a bulb on their head that lights up to attract prey.

예를 들어, 아귀는 먹이를 유인하기 위해 불을 밝히는 머리 위의 동그란 부분을 이용한다.

Smaller fish don’t see the danger behind this light and swim toward it.

더 작은 어류는 이 빛 뒤에 있는 위험을 알지 못하고 그것을 향해 헤엄쳐 간다.

Attracting mates and frightening away bigger fish are other uses of bioluminescence.

짝을 유혹하는 것과 더 큰 어류를 겁을 주어 쫓아내는 것이 생물 발광의 다른 용도이다.

Ostracods, small shrimplike creatures, attract mates by lighting up their upper lip.

작은 새우 같은 생물체인 오스트라코다는 윗입술에 빛을 밝혀서 짝을 유혹한다.

Some deep-sea worms also shoot bioluminescent bullets to confuse attackers.

어떤 심해 벌레들은 공격하는 자들을 혼란스럽게 하기 위해 생물 발광 탄알을 쏘기도 한다.

The bioluminescence of sea creatures also benefits us.

해양 생물의 생물 발광은 우리에게도 유익하다.

We can look upon our oceans and see the beautiful lights deep below the surface.
