A bell rings and two strong fighters step into a boxing ring.

This is what happens in a popular new sport called chess boxing.

At the beginning of a chess boxing match, the fighters play chess for four minutes.

After the chessboard is taken away, a three-minute boxing round begins.

The idea for chess boxing originally came from the French cartoonist Enki Bilal’s 1992 graphic novel Froid Équateur.

But the Dutch artist Iepe Rubingh turned this idea into a reality.

In Bilal’s graphic novel, a whole boxing match was held and then followed by a chess match.

Rubingh changed the rules so that fighters switch between rounds of chess and boxing.

Over time, more and more people have become interested in chess boxing.

Now, competitions are held in Europe, the United States, and Japan.
