As the sun rises over Bwindi National Park in Uganda, a family of gorillas is waking up.
They come out of their leafy beds, sit down a few meters away, and start eating the nearby plants.
While the gorillas are eating, a scientist is observing what kinds of plants they eat.
Why?
Because gorillas naturally choose foods that may also be healthy for humans!
Research into gorilla’s eating habits began in the 1980s.
Back then, scientists realized that chimpanzees always eat a particular plant when they have a stomachache.
It was later discovered that this plant can cure stomachaches in humans by killing germs.
Some scientists decided to study the diet of animals in order to find more plants which act as medicines.
They chose gorillas because gorillas eat so many different kinds of plants, thus the possibility of discovering useful medicines goes up.
In the forest, the scientists collect samples of gorillas’ favorite foods.
Then they test them to find out their various uses.
So far, the scientists have found 71 different kinds of plants that gorillas like to eat.
They think at least three of these plants may be medicines.
It will take some time to test all the different plants.
But thanks to gorillas, people may someday benefit from these medicines.
Gorillas are just like humans in many ways.
They have two legs and arms, ten fingers and toes, and even 32 teeth like us.
They spend their days caring for one another, eating, playing, and sleeping together.
Sadly, these beautiful and intelligent creatures are seriously endangered.
There are now very few gorillas left, and they face many threats.
The biggest problem is that they are losing their homes.
People cut down their forests for wood.
Also, hunters try to kill gorillas and make money from selling their meat.
We must make an effort to protect these “gentle giants.”
Otherwise, they will soon disappear and we may not see their friendly faces again.
Malala Yousafzai is a very special girl.
She has become an international symbol of peace and children’s rights.
When Malala was 11 years old, the Taliban took over her town in Pakistan.
Girls were forbidden from getting an education.
Unable to attend school, Malala kept a blog instead.
She wrote about her strong belief that everyone has the right to an education.
The Taliban wanted to stop her, so they sent someone to kill her.
He got on a truck that was taking Malala to school and shot her in the head.
Fortunately, she survived.
And she refused to let the attack silence her.
Just nine months later, she gave a speech at the United Nations.
She said, “They thought that the bullets would silence me.”
But they failed.
And then, out of that silence came thousands of voices.
Weakness, fear and hopelessness died.
Strength, power, and courage were born.
Her words inspired people around the world.
In 2011, she won her country’s National Youth Peace Prize.
And in 2014, she became the youngest person ever to win the Nobel Peace Prize.
Winning the Nobel Peace Prize encouraged Malala to continue her efforts.
“This award is for all those children whose voices need to be heard,” she said.
The first ever Youth Takeover of the UN took place on July 12, 2013.
There were hundreds of representatives from all over the world at the event, but it was Malala’s speech that got the world’s attention.
Hello, everyone.
My name is Malala, and I am honored to be speaking to you today.
When we see darkness, we realize the importance of light; when we are silenced, we come to know the value of our voice.
It wasn’t until I was faced with guns in Pakistan that I realized the importance of education.
Every woman and child struggling for their rights must pick up their most powerful weapons — books and pens.
Together, one child, one teacher, one pen, and one book can change the world.
What color is the number 4?
Is the month of May sad or happy?
To most people, these questions are nonsense.
But to those who have a special sense known as synesthesia, they aren’t crazy at all.
Synesthesia affects the way people sense and think about things.
It is the mixing of one sense, such as sight, with another one, such as hearing.
There are more than 60 different types of synesthesia that have been reported.
For example, some people automatically think of a color when they see a certain letter or number.
Others may hear a certain sound every time they smell a rose.
There have been many famous people with synesthesia.
One of them was the Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky.
He experienced the mixed senses of sight and hearing.
As he painted, he heard music that was made by each color.
Despite the fact that we know a lot about synesthesia, scientists still don’t know exactly what causes it.
They think there is some confusion in the brain.
Parts of the brain that are supposed to belong to one sense are used by another.
These “connections” between different areas of the brain are probably created at birth.
In fact, some scientists think that a large number of children have synesthesia.
As they grow older, the strange connections in their brains disappear.
You might hear synesthesia mentioned in a poetry class.
That’s because the term “synesthesia” is used when a poet expresses a connection between the senses.
For example, a poet may talk about “a hard, metallic sound” or “a delicious feeling.”
In fact, synesthesia is common in English.
Synesthesia is also talked about in music, because people tend to connect musical tones with particular colors.
In general, people connect high tones with light colors and low tones with dark ones.
While real synesthesia is not very common, people seem to be able to easily understand it.
So, try to imagine “a silky voice” or “a dark red sound.”
You should find it easy.
Many factors can influence the result of a baseball game.
But did you know that the baseball park itself has an important effect on how the game is played?
Most sports are played on fields that are all exactly the same, but not baseball.
While all ballparks must follow the same measurements for the infield, the outfield is different in each one.
That means each playing field can be different in size and shape.
Moreover, some fields have fences that are higher or lower than others.
Some have roofs, and some don’t.
Because of these differences, there are ballparks where teams are more likely to score a lot of runs, and parks that usually see low-scoring games.
The first group are known as “hitter’s parks,” while those in the second group are “pitcher’s parks.”
The Astros’ Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas is a hitter’s park.
Its outfield is rather small, so a hit that would be an easy out at another park is often a home run at Minute Maid.
Both coaches and players know these differences, and they’ll often change strategies according to which park they play in.
The uniqueness of baseball parks is something that makes the sport more exciting.
Each park, like each game, is different.
Therefore, fans never know what’s going to happen.
You’ve probably seen baseball fields many times.
But there are some places that might not be so familiar: the dugouts and the bullpens.
A dugout is an area on the side of the field.
There is a bench inside it for players to sit on during the game.
There are also places for players to keep their equipment, such as helmets and bats.
On one side of the dugout, there is usually a place called a bullpen.
This is where pitchers can warm up before entering a game.
r’s mound and a home plate.
Have you ever thought about having a robot that you could have a conversation with while it cleaned your house?
This might be possible someday thanks to artificial intelligence, or AI.
AI makes computers think like humans do.
Let’s take a closer look at two ways it can do this— neural networks and deep learning.
AI programs usually use a neural network.
This is a type of computer system that works like a human brain.
It has many connected parts that can handle simple questions on their own.
When these parts work together, they can answer highly complex problems.
Deep learning, on the other hand, is a process that takes a lot of time and works by giving a computer various types of information.
If you wanted a computer to recognize a certain type of tree, for instance, you might give it information about the tree’s shape or where it grows.
The computer would then use all of this information when trying to identify the tree.
AI is actually already all around us—from smartphones that can talk to us to driverless cars.
And this technology is getting better and better every year.
Let’s hope that computers don’t get too smart and end up taking over the world!
In March of 2016, Google’s AlphaGo AI program beat Lee Sedol in a five-game match of go.
It was the first time a computer program beat a 9-dan player.
Experts worldwide were impressed by AlphaGo’s abilities.
However, they have expressed mixed opinions about this kind of powerful AI program.
Some believe that AI programs could be dangerous, because they think the programs might be able to control people someday.
Others believe that there is no need for humans to worry.
These experts point out that AlphaGo only deals with the information within each game.
So, unlike humans, it can’t see the bigger picture.
