If you are a fan of the color pink, then you would probably like Lake Retba in Senegal.

This lake, also called Lake Rose, catches the eye because of its vivid pink color.

So what makes the lake pink? Lake Retba has a high salt concentration.

The lake’s salt density is so high that a kind of algae, Dunaliella salina, can thrive.

그 호수의 염분 농도는 매우 높아서 조류의 한 종류인 두날리엘라 살리나가 번성할 수 있다.

To absorb sunlight for energy, the algae produce a red pigment.

에너지를 위한 햇빛을 흡수하기 위해, 그 조류는 붉은 색소를 만들어낸다.

This pigment then turns the water pink and has made the lake a popular attraction.

그리고 이 색소가 물을 분홍색으로 변하게 하고, 호수를 인기 있는 명소로 만들었다.

Lake Retba is not only a famous tourist destination but also a source of income for locals.

Retba 호수는 인기 있는 관광지일 뿐만 아니라 주민들의 수입원이기도 하다.

About 3,000 local salt miners harvest salt from the lake.

약 3,000명의 현지 소금 광부들이 호수에서 소금을 채취한다.

If you visit the lake, you will see that they harvest salt from the bottom of the lake and pile it up on the shore.

This salt is exported all over West Africa.

They not only require a lot of energy to make but also take a long time to break down after we throw them away.

For these reasons, a company has invented a new way to carry water around—capsules made from seaweed.

The capsules look like small water balloons.

그 캡슐들은 작은 물풍선처럼 생겼다.

When you get thirsty, you just put one in your mouth and bite it.

목이 마를 때, 당신은 그저 하나를 입에 넣고 그것을 깨물어라.

You can eat the whole thing because the capsules are edible.

그 캡슐들은 먹을 수 있기 때문에 통째로 먹을 수 있다.

But if you don’t want to do this, you can just throw the used capsules in the trash.

Unlike plastic bottles, they are completely natural and break down quickly.

플라스틱병과 달리, 그것들은 완전히 천연이고 빨리 분해된다.
