There are a few inventions that changed the way people communicate.
We know all about Samuel Morse for inventing the telegram and Alexander Bell for inventing the telephone.
But what about email?
Everyone uses it now.
But do you know who invented email?
The inventor of email was Ray Tomlinson, an American computer programmer.
The computers used by Tomlinson’s company already had a message system in the 1970s.
But this system could only send messages to other users on the same computer.
And the user had to use the same machine to check his or her mailbox.
In short, people couldn’t send messages to different computers.
Tomlinson decided to change the system to make it more useful.
He found he could do this by adding simple changes to the existing program.
Finally, he sent a message from one computer to another.
The computers were right next to each other, but they were connected by a network.
The message flew through the network, traveling between two machines in the same room.
Interestingly, his system wasn’t thought to be important at first, even by Tomlinson himself.
This is because he didn’t plan to invent a new communication technology.
People didn’t begin to use email widely for several years.
Maybe that’s why today, even though everyone uses email, most people don’t know the story of its invention.
You have probably used the @ sign when sending an email, such as expert@ example.com.
It means the user expert is at the example.com domain.
But what do you call the sign?
In English, it is short for the word “at,” so English speakers call it the “at sign.”
However, in non-English speaking countries, the “@” sign has gained some very interesting nicknames, mostly based on how it looks!
In Sweden, it is called a “cinnamon bun.”
In France, people call it a “little snail.”
Dutch people call it a “monkey tail,” and Germans call it a “spider monkey.”
What do you think it looks most like?
Does it remind you of a cat, a puppy, or something else?
