A long time ago, there were no stamps or envelopes.

옛날에는 우표나 우편봉투가 없었다.

People would simply fold their letters, glue them shut, and have them delivered.

사람들은 단순하게 편지를 접어 풀로 붙이고 배달시켰다.

The person who received the letter had to pay for the cost of the delivery.

편지를 받은 사람은 배달비를 지불해야 했다.

Since this was very expensive, many people didn’t accept the letters sent to them.

이것이 매우 비쌌기 때문에 많은 사람들은 자신에게 보내어진 편지를 받지 않았다.

In fact, some people would even write in secret code on the outside of their letters.

사실, 어떤 사람들은 심지어 편지의 겉면에 비밀 암호를 써넣기도 했다.

This way, the other person could read their message without paying for it!

이런 식으로, 상대방은 비용을 지불하지 않고도 메시지를 읽을 수 있었다!

In 1837, the British Post Office decided to stop this kind of dishonest behavior.

1837년에 영국 우체국은 이런 종류의 부정직한 행위를 근절하기로 결정했다.

To do so, they introduced a brand new system for sending and receiving letters.

그러기 위해서 그들은 편지를 보내고 받기 위한 새로운 시스템을 도입했다.

In this new system, a person who wanted to send a letter had to pay before it was delivered.

이 새로운 시스템에서는 편지를 보내고 싶은 사람이 그것이 배달되기 전에 돈을 지불해야 했다.

To show that the letter had been paid for, the post office would glue a small piece of paper to the outside of the letter.

편지에 비용이 지불되었다는 것을 나타내기 위해 우체국은 편지의 겉면에 작은 종이 조각을 붙였다.

So, in 1840, the very first stamp was printed.

그래서 1840년에 최초의 우표가 인쇄되었다.

Because it was black and cost one penny, it quickly became known as the “Penny Black.”

In the early 20th century, tuberculosis was a terrible disease that affected many children.

In order to help these children, a postal clerk in Denmark came up with an idea.

He wanted to sell a special extra stamp for letters sent during the holiday season.

The money from these stamps could then be used to help sick children.

이 우표에서 나온 돈은 그리고 나서 아픈 아이들을 돕는 데 사용될 수 있었다.

So, in 1904, the first “Christmas Seal” was created.

이렇게 해서 1904년에 최초의 ‘크리스마스실’이 만들어졌다.

There was a picture of the queen of Denmark and the Danish word for Christmas on it.

여기에는 덴마크 여왕의 사진과 크리스마스에 해당하는 덴마크어가 새겨졌다.

That year, more than 4 million Christmas Seals were sold.

그 해에 4백만 장 이상의 크리스마스실이 판매되었다.

Soon, many other countries created their own Christmas Seals.

곧 많은 다른 국가들도 그들만의 크리스마스실을 만들었다.

Today, they are found all over the world.
