The Five Wise Men

5명의 지혜로운 사람들

One day, five wise men met on the road.

어느 날 5명의 지혜로운 사람들이 길에서 만났다.

They agreed to travel together.

그들은 여행을 함께 하기로 했다.

On the way, however, they became lost in a thick forest.

그러나 도중에 그들은 울창한 숲속에서 길을 잃게 되었다.

Before walking any further, they decided to stop and find the best way out.

더 멀리 가기 전에 그들은 멈추고 빠져나갈 최선의 방법을 찾기로 결정했다.

After thinking for a while, the first man said, “I strongly feel that we should go left.”

잠시 동안 생각한 후, 첫 번째 남자가 말했다. “우리가 왼쪽으로 가야 한다는 생각이 강하게 들어요.”

The second man said, “We should go right, because right also means ‘correct.’”

두 번째 남자가 말했다. “우리는 오른쪽으로 가야 해요. 왜냐하면 ‘오른쪽’은 또한 ‘옳은’이라는 의미이기 때문이죠.”

Then the third man said, “Let’s walk back."

그러자 세 번째 남자가 말했다. “뒤로 돌아갑시다."

We came that way, so we can leave that way.

우리가 그 길로 왔으니 그 길로 나갈 수 있을 겁니다.

Then we can walk around the forest.

그러면 우리는 숲을 한 바퀴 돌 수 있고요.

The fourth man disagreed and said, “I think we should keep walking straight."

네 번째 남자가 이의를 제기하며 말했다. “나는 우리가 똑바로 계속 걸어 나가야 한다고 생각해요."

The forest cannot go on forever.

숲이 영원히 계속될 수는 없으니까요.

A new path will open.

새로운 길이 열릴 것입니다.

Looking at them all, the fifth man shook his head and said, “I know how to solve this."

모두를 바라보면서 다섯 번째 남자가 고개를 저으며 말했다. “나는 이것을 해결하는 방법을 알아요."

Just wait.

잠깐 기다려 보세요.

He started to climb the tallest tree he could find.

그는 그가 찾을 수 있는 가장 높은 나무를 오르기 시작했다.

As he climbed, everyone else decided to go their separate ways.

그가 올라가자 다른 모든 사람들은 각자 서로 다른 길을 가기로 결정했다.

When the fifth man reached the top, he could see the whole forest.

다섯 번째 남자가 꼭대기에 이르자 그는 전체 숲을 볼 수 있었다.

Looking at all the paths, he found the shortest way out.

모든 길을 바라보며 그는 빠져나갈 가장 짧은 길을 찾았다.

He hurried down to tell the others.

그는 다른 사람들에게 알리기 위해 급히 내려갔다.

However, when he got to the bottom, everyone was gone.

하지만 그가 밑으로 내려왔을 때, 모든 사람들은 이미 가 버리고 없었다.

He thought to himself, Where did they go?

그는 마음 속으로 생각했다. ‘다들 어디 간 거야?'

I found the best way out.

내가 빠져나갈 최선의 길을 찾았는데.'

He thought they were all wrong and he was the only wise man.

그는 그들이 모두 틀렸고 자신이 유일하게 현명한 사람이라고 생각했다.

However, he was wrong.

그러나 그가 틀렸다.

Everyone was wise.

모두가 지혜로웠다.

Each man had chosen his path and created his future.

각자 자신의 길을 선택했고 자신의 미래를 만들었다.

The man who went to the left walked deeper into the forest.

왼쪽으로 간 남자는 숲속으로 더 깊이 걸어 들어갔다.

He was attacked by wild animals and almost died of hunger.

그는 야생 동물들의 습격을 받았고 거의 굶어 죽을 뻔했다.

Soon he learned how to protect himself and find food.

머지않아 그는 자신을 지키고 먹을 것을 찾는 방법을 터득했다.

In the end, he made his way out of the forest and taught others survival skills.

결국 그는 숲 밖으로 빠져나왔고 다른 사람들에게 생존 기술을 가르쳤다.

The man who went to the right met a group of thieves.

오른쪽으로 간 남자는 도둑 무리를 만났다.

They took everything from him and made him join them.

그들은 그에게서 모든 것을 가져갔고 그를 그들과 합류시켰다.

While he was with them, he showed them great kindness.

그는 그들과 함께 있는 동안 그들에게 많은 친절을 베풀었다.

The thieves were moved by his kindness and learned from his wisdom.

그 도둑들은 그의 친절에 감동을 받았고 그의 지혜에서 배우게 되었다.

Later, they also became wise men.

나중에 그들 또한 지혜로운 사람들이 되었다.

The man who walked back created a safe path around the forest.

뒤돌아 간 남자는 숲 주변에 안전한 길을 만들었다.

Using this path, people could get where they were going without getting lost, even though the trip took a little longer.

사람들은 이 길을 이용할 때 길을 잃지 않고 자신이 가고자 하는 길에 다다를 수 있었다. 비록 이동 시간이 약간 더 오래 걸려도 말이다.

The man who went straight became a pioneer.

똑바로 간 남자는 개척자가 되었다.

He left the forest and discovered places no one else had been before.

그는 숲을 벗어나 아무도 이전에 가 본 적이 없는 곳을 발견했다.

Thanks to him, people could enjoy these new beautiful lands.

그 남자 덕분에, 사람들은 이 새롭고 아름다운 지역을 즐길 수 있었다.

The man who climbed the tree became a guide.

나무 위로 올라간 남자는 가이드가 되었다.

Since he had found many different paths, he was able to teach people how to find the quickest ways to their destinations.

그는 여러 다양한 길을 발견했었기 때문에, 사람들에게 자신의 목적지에 이르는 가장 빠른 길을 찾는 법을 가르쳐 줄 수 있었다.

This is how the five men found their own paths.

이런 식으로 다섯 남자는 자신만의 길을 찾아냈다.

Like them, we are each on our own journey in life, and we cannot compare one journey to another.

그들처럼 우리는 각각 인생에서 자기 자신만의 여행을 하고 있고, 우리는 한 여정을 다른 것과 비교할 수 없다.

You have to create your own path.

당신은 당신 자신만의 길을 만들어가야 한다.

Listen to yourself, make a decision, and act on it.

자신의 목소리를 듣고, 결정하고, 그 결정에 따라 행동하라.

Then, someday, you will realize that you have been living the life that is right for you.

그러면 언젠가 당신은 당신에게 맞는 삶을 살아가고 있다는 것을 깨닫게 될 것이다.
