Vending machines are a modern convenience that many people use.

자동판매기는 많은 사람이 이용하는 현대의 편의 시설이다.

Surprisingly, however, modern people were not the first to use them.

하지만 놀랍게도, 현대인이 그것들을 이용한 최초는 아니었다.

In ancient Egypt, people bought holy water to wash themselves before entering a temple.

고대 이집트에서, 사람들은 신전에 들어가기 전에 자신들을 씻기 위해 성수를 샀다.

Priests often distributed holy water, but this took a long time.

사제들이 대개 성수를 나누어 주었는데, 이것은 시간이 오래 걸렸다.

However, without the priests, people could take more water than they paid for.

하지만, 사제들이 없으면, 사람들은 그들이 지불한 것보다 더 많은 물을 가져갈 수 있었다.

A Greek engineer named Hero of Alexandria solved these problems by inventing the first vending machine in 215 BC.

Hero of Alexandria라는 이름의 한 그리스 기술자가 기원전 215년에 최초의 자동판매기를 발명함으로써 이 문제들을 해결했다.

So how did this machine work?

그러면 이 기계는 어떻게 작동했을까?

When a visitor put a coin in the machine, it fell onto one side of a long tray.

Its weight caused the tray to tilt, which opened a pipe at the bottom of the machine.

This allowed the holy water to flow out.

이것은 성수가 흘러나오도록 했다.

When the coin slid off the tray, the pipe closed and no more water came out.

Thanks to Hero’s automatic water dispenser, many ancient priests were able to save time and holy water!
