Clocks are everywhere.
We look at them many times each day.
Yet we never think about why clock hands move to the right.
In the past, people used sundials to tell the time.
A sundial casts a shadow onto a circular plate.
This shadow acts like a clock’s hands.
In the Northern Hemisphere, the shadow points to the west in the morning and slowly moves to the right.
At noon, it points straight to the north.
The shadow keeps moving to the right throughout the day.
In the 1300s, mechanical clocks were invented in the Northern Hemisphere.
So their hands moved in the same direction as a sundial’s shadow.
Today this direction is known as “clockwise.”
In the Southern Hemisphere, however, sundial shadows move in the opposite direction.
So if the mechanical clock had been invented in the Southern Hemisphere, clock hands would probably move counterclockwise!
