California’s Death Valley National Park is home to the “sailing stones,” large rocks that actually move across the mud.

캘리포니아의 데스밸리 국립공원은 실제로 진흙을 가로질러 움직이는 커다란 바위인 ‘미끄러지듯 움직이는 돌’의 고향이다.

For decades, the rocks were a mystery because they weigh up to 318 kg.

수십 년 동안, 그 바위들은 무게가 318kg까지 나기기 때문에 수수께끼였다.

Moreover, no one had ever seen them move, but they left clear tracks in the mud.

Finally, a team of scientists decided to investigate.

Using GPS, cameras, and weather data, they found that the movement is caused by a combination of rain, ice, sun, and wind.

First, rain creates a shallow pond.

At night, the water at the surface of the pond freezes, and the ice surrounds the rocks.

During the day, however, the ice starts to melt, breaking up into large sheets that push against the rocks.

그러나 낮 동안에 그 얼음은 녹기 시작하여, 그 바위들에 대고 밀어내는 커다란 판들로 부서진다.

Of course, this alone isn’t enough to move the rocks.

물론, 이것만으로는 그 바위들을 움직이기에 충분하지 않다.

When wind speeds reach about 11 km/h, the force of the ice and wind together causes the rocks to move at speeds up to five meters per minute.

풍속이 약 시속 11km에 이를 때, 얼음과 바람이 함께하는 힘은 그 바위들이 분당 5미터에 달하는 속도로 움직이게 한다.

The mystery was solved!
