Plastic is one of the most common artificial materials used in our daily lives.

We store food in plastic containers, carry groceries in plastic bags and drink out of plastic cups.

But did you know that plastic also plays an important role in the medical industry?

하지만 플라스틱이 의료업계에서도 중요한 역할을 한다는 것은 알고 있었는가?

Plastic has caused significant changes in the medical industry by reducing the risk of infection.

플라스틱은 감염의 위험을 줄임으로써 의료업계에 중요한 변화를 야기했다.

Before disposable plastic products existed, hospitals used to boil medical tools to sanitize them.

일회용 플라스틱 제품이 존재하기 전에 병원들은 의료도구를 끓여 소독했다.

Although this method worked, there was a danger of infection if the tools were not properly sanitized.

이 방식은 효과가 있었지만, 도구들이 제대로 소독되지 않았을 경우 감염의 위험이 있었다.

However, disposable products have solved this problem.

하지만, 일회용 제품은 이 문제를 해결했다.

Another medical use of plastic is to make artificial joints.

Artificial hips and knees are needed by many older people so that they can continue to walk.

Today, many joints are made from a combination of metal and plastic parts.

오늘날, 많은 관절은 금속과 플라스틱 부품의 조합에서 만들어진다.

If you wear glasses or contact lenses, you can thank plastic for giving you good eyesight.

Today, actual glass isn’t used to make eyeglass lenses anymore.

현재는 안경렌즈 제작에 진짜 유리는 더이상 사용되지 않는다.

Instead, plastic is used.

Plastic eyeglass lenses are lighter, thinner, less likely to break and harder to scratch.

And contact lenses are made of plastic, too.

그리고 콘택트렌즈 역시 플라스틱에서 만들어졌다.

This makes them more comfortable than those that were made of glass.

While plastic causes some environmental problems, it also brings us many benefits.

플라스틱은 몇몇 환경 문제를 유발하지만, 우리에게 많은 혜택을 주기도 한다.

Without it, our lives would be much more difficult.

우리의 삶은 이것 없이는 훨씬 더 어려울 것이다.

In the future, we should continue to enjoy its advantages while finding ways to lessen its disadvantages.

앞으로는, 불이익을 줄이는 방법을 찾는 동시에 그 장점을 계속 누려야 할 것이다.
