At the end of every year, there’s something special at the Enoshima Aquarium in Japan.

매년 말, 일본 에노시마 수족관에는 뭔가 특별한 것이 있다.

It’s a Christmas tree that is about 183 centimeters tall.

바로 약 183 센티미터 높이의 크리스마스 트리다.

It has decorations and lights like any other Christmas tree.

다른 크리스마스 트리와 마찬가지로 장식물과 조명이 달려 있다.

So what’s so special about it?

This tree is powered by an electric eel!

이 트리는 전기뱀장어로부터 전력을 공급받는다!

Electric eels live mainly in the streams and ponds of South America.

전기뱀장어는 주로 남아메리카의 시내와 못에 산다.

Of all the animals that produce electricity, electric eels give off the most.

전기를 생산하는 모든 동물들 가운데, 전기뱀장어가 가장 많은 전기를 방출한다.

Electric eels have about 6,000 special cells that store power like batteries.

전기뱀장어는 건전지처럼 전력을 저장하는 약 6000 개의 특별한 세포를 갖고 있다.

They can give off 500 to 800 volts of electricity.

이 세포들은 500에서 800 볼트의 전기를 방출할 수 있다.

That’s more power than an electrical socket in your home.

이는 당신의 집에 있는 전기 콘센트보다도 많은 전력이다.

What’s even more surprising is that they can control the amount of electricity they give off.

더욱 놀라운 것은 이들이 방출하는 전기의 양을 조절할 수 있다는 점이다.

For example, an electric eel gives off more electricity to protect itself from fish that attack it than it does to shock and catch fish to eat.

예를 들어, 전기뱀장어는 자신을 공격하는 물고기로부터 자신을 보호하기 위해서는 물고기에 충격을 주어 잡아먹기 위해서보다 더 많은 전기를 방출한다.

So how does the electric eel light the Christmas tree?

The power of the electric eel is captured with a specially designed water tank.

전기뱀장어의 전력은 특별히 설계된 물탱크에 포착된다.

There are two aluminum panels inside the tank, which make it act like a battery.

탱크 안에는 두 개의 알루미늄 판이 있어, 물탱크가 건전지처럼 작동하게 한다.

The electric eel gives off electricity every time it moves.

전기뱀장어는 움직일 때마다 전기를 방출한다.

The aluminum panels absorb that electricity.

알루미늄 판들은 그 전기를 흡수한다.

The electricity then travels from the aluminum panels to the lights on the Christmas tree.

그 다음에 전기는 알루미늄 판에서 크리스마스 트리의 조명으로 이동한다.

The purpose of the eel-powered Christmas tree is to promote eco-awareness.

뱀장어가 전력을 공급하는 크리스마스 트리의 목적은 환경의식을 홍보하기 위한 것이다.

It serves as an example of a way to generate electricity that does not harm the environment.

Although electric eels are probably not the future of electric energy, they can teach us to be more aware of the environment.
