Electricity was first found in nature.

전기는 처음에 자연에서 발견되었다.

But since then, people have found ways to make electricity for themselves, bringing many dramatic changes to our lives.

하지만 그 이래로, 사람들은 자신들을 위해 전기를 만드는 법을 찾아내어 우리 삶에 많은 극적인 변화를 가져왔다.

So how is electricity made?

그럼 전기는 어떻게 만들어지는가?

Most of the electricity we use every day is produced by generators in power plants.

우리가 매일 사용하는 전기의 대부분은 발전소의 발전기에 의해 생산된다.

A generator is a machine with magnets inside it.

발전기는 안에 자석이 들어있는 기계다.

The magnets spin around a wire.

자석들은 철사 주변을 돈다.

The spinning of the magnets is what creates electricity.

자석의 회전이 전기를 만드는 것이다.

Below are some of the methods used to operate generators.

아래에 발전기 작동에 이용되는 방법 몇 가지가 나와 있다.

Steam

증기

Fossil fuels can be burned to create steam, which is then used to operate generators.

화석연료는 연소되어 증기를 만들 수 있고, 이 증기는 그 다음에 발전기 작동에 사용된다.

This is the most common method of operating generators.

이는 발전기를 작동시키는 가장 흔한 방법이다.

Unfortunately, burning fossil fuels releases large amounts of carbon into the air, so it pollutes our environment.

안타깝게도, 화석연료 연소는 대량의 탄소를 공기에 발산하기 때문에, 우리 환경을 오염시킨다.

Using nuclear power is another way to create steam.

원자력 사용은 증기를 생성하는 다른 방식이다.

Nuclear reactions create lots of heat, which is then used to make steam.

원자력반응은 많은 열을 생산하고, 이 열은 그 다음에 증기를 만드는 데 사용된다.

Nuclear power has the disadvantage of producing radioactive waste, but many countries use it to replace fossil fuels.

원자력은 방사능폐기물을 생산하는 단점이 있지만, 많은 나라들이 이를 화석연료 대체에 사용한다.

When water flows through dams, it produces energy that operates generators.

물이 댐을 통해 흐르면, 발전기를 작동시키는 에너지를 생산한다.

This is a renewable and relatively clean method of producing electricity.

이는 재생 가능하고 상대적으로 깨끗한 전기생산 방식이다.

However, building dams can have harmful effects on plants and animals that live in the water.

하지만, 댐 건설은 물 속에 사는 식물과 동물에 해로운 영향을 미칠 수 있다.

Wind

바람

Wind causes windmills to turn, which can also power generators.

바람은 풍차가 돌게 하고, 풍차는 발전기에 전력을 공급할 수도 있다.

Wind power causes fewer problems than other methods of creating electricity, but it is not reliable because the wind does not blow all the time.

풍력은 전기를 만드는 다른 방식들보다는 적은 문제를 유발하지만, 바람은 늘 부는 것이 아니기 때문에 신뢰하기 어렵다.

Not all electricity is made by generators, though.

하지만 모든 전기가 발전기에 의해 만들어지는 것은 아니다.

There are many alternative methods to make electricity.

전기를 만들기 위해서는 여러 가지 대안들이 있다.

For example, we can use sunlight.

예를 들어, 햇빛을 이용할 수가 있다.

Solar energy is created when the sun’s energy is changed into electricity.

태양에너지는 태양의 에너지가 전기로 변할 때 만들어진다.

What else can be used to make electricity?
