The Eiger is a mountain in Switzerland.

아이거는 스위스에 있는 산이다.

It is 3,970 meters high, and there are several routes to climb up to the top.

이 산은 고도 3970미터로, 정상까지 올라가는 등반로가 여럿 있다.

The north face of the Eiger is the most famous of these routes.

아이거의 북벽은 이들 등반로 가운데 가장 유명하다.

It is called Nordwand in German, which simply means north wall.

독일어로는 단지 "북벽"을 뜻하는 노르트반트라 불린다.

However, it is nicknamed Mordwand, which means death wall.

하지만, "죽음의 벽"을 뜻하는 모르트반트라는 별명도 붙어 있다.

People have been trying to climb the north face of the Eiger for years, but few have succeeded.

사람들은 오랫동안 아이거 북벽 등반을 시도해왔지만, 성공한 사람은 거의 없다.

In fact, more than 65 people have been killed trying to reach the top.

사실, 65명이 넘는 사람들이 정상에 오르려다 사망했다.

The first people who succeeded were a group of two Germans and two Austrians on July 24, 1938.

최초로 성공한 사람들은 1938년 7월 24일 두 명의 독일인과 두 명의 오스트리아인이었다.

There are three main reasons why climbing the north face of the Eiger is so challenging.

아이거 북벽 등반이 그렇게 쉽지 않은 데는 세 가지 주된 이유가 있다.

The first is that the length of the route is longer than the north face itself.

첫째는 등반로의 길이가 북벽 자체보다 길다는 데 있다.

The north face is 1,800 meters high, but the route is more than 2,500 meters long.

북벽은 고도가 1800미터이지만, 등반로는 2500미터가 넘는다.

This is because the wall is so steep that climbers have to go up many twists and turns.

이는 북벽이 아주 가팔라서 등산하는 사람들은 여러 번 돌고 굽는 길을 올라가야 하기 때문이다.

Secondly, snowstorms can occur at any time.

둘째로, 눈보라가 언제든지 발생할 수 있다.

Many climbers have been trapped on the mountain as a result.

많은 등산가들이 그 때문에 산에 갇혔다.

Some have even frozen to death after being caught in snowstorms.

몇몇은 눈보라에 잡힌 뒤 얼어 죽기까지 했다.

Finally, warmer temperatures in summer have been causing the ice on the face to melt.

마지막으로, 여름의 따뜻한 기온이 벽 위의 얼음이 녹게 한다.

This makes the face very unstable and can lead to falling rocks.

이는 벽을 아주 불안정하게 만들고 낙석으로 이어질 수 있다.

Even with its scary nickname and difficult route, many climbers still dream of making it to the top of the north face of the Eiger.

공포스러운 별명과 힘든 등반로에도 불구하고, 많은 등산가들은 여전히 아이거 북벽 정상에 오르는 것을 꿈꾼다.

No matter how difficult something may be, the spirit of adventure will ensure that people keep trying.
