The Amazon rainforest is the largest tropical rainforest in the world.

아마존 우림은 세계 최대의 열대 우림이다.

Amazingly, over one third of the world’s animal species live there, and many of them are only found in the Amazon.

놀랍게도, 세계 동물 종의 3분의 1이 그 곳에 살고 있으며, 그들 중 다수는 아마존에서만 찾아볼 수 있다.

Let’s meet some of the animals!

그 동물들 중 몇몇을 만나보자!

Hyacinth Macaw

히아신스마코앵무새

The Hyacinth Macaw is the largest parrot by length in the world.

히아신스 마코앵무새는 길이로 세계에서 가장 큰 앵무새다.

It is 100 centimeters long from the end of its tail to the top of its head.

이 새는 꼬리 끝에서 머리 꼭대기까지의 길이가 100 센티미터다.

Its body is covered with beautiful blue feathers.

몸은 아름다운 푸른 깃털로 덮여 있다.

Amazon River Dolphin

아마존민물돌고래

The Amazon river dolphin is commonly known as the pink dolphin because of its pink skin.

아마존민물돌고래는 분홍색 피부 때문에 흔히 "분홍돌고래"로 알려져 있다.

It looks pink because its blood vessels are very close to the surface of its skin.

분홍색으로 보이는 것은 혈관이 피부 표면 아주 가까이에 있기 때문이다.

It is considered the smartest of the river dolphins.

이 돌고래는 민물돌고래 가운데 가장 영리하다고 여겨진다.

Its brain size is 40% larger than that of humans!

뇌의 크기는 인간보다 40%가 더 크다!

Golden Lion Tamarin

황금사자타마린

The golden lion tamarin is a small monkey that has bright, reddish-orange hair around its face.

황금사자타마린은 얼굴 주위에 밝은 적황색 털이 난 작은 원숭이다.

Its hair makes it look like a little lion.

털 때문에 작은 사자처럼 보인다.

It moves its nest frequently so that predators can’t find it.

황금사자타마린은 포식자가 찾지 못하도록 보금자리를 자주 옮긴다.

Its slender arms and legs, sharp claws, and long tail help it live in the trees.

가느다란 팔다리와 뾰족한 고리발톱, 긴 꼬리는 나무에 거주하는 데 도움이 된다.

Poison Dart Frog

독화살개구리

Ranging from 1.5 cm to 6 cm in length, the poison dart frog is very tiny.

길이가 1.5 센티미터에서 6 센티미터에 달하는 독화살개구리는 아주 작다.

But its bright, colorful skin is poisonous.

하지만 그 밝고 다채로운 피부는 독성이 있다.

If a predator tries to eat the frog, the poison will paralyze the predator almost instantly.

포식자가 이 개구리를 먹으려고 하면, 독이 포식자를 거의 순간적으로 마비시킬 것이다.

Unfortunately, many animals in the Amazon, including the examples above, are endangered.

안타깝게도, 위의 예를 포함한 아마존의 많은 동물들이 멸종 위기에 처해 있다.

Some of them have lost their habitats because of deforestation, while others have been hunted for their beautiful fur.

그들 중 일부는 벌목 때문에 서식지를 잃었고, 다른 동물들은 아름다운 모피 때문에 사냥을 당해왔다.

If we want to see these amazing animals in the future, we must protect the Amazon rainforest.

앞으로도 이들 놀라운 동물들을 보고 싶다면, 아마존 우림을 보호해야 한다.
