On TV, the sea seems peaceful and quiet.

텔레비전에서 바다는 평화롭고 조용하게 보인다.

It looks as if there would only be the sounds of ocean waves above the surface and the soft sounds of sea animals below.

해수 표면 위에는 바다의 파도 소리만, 그 아래에는 바다 동물들의 조용한 소리만 들릴 것처럼 보인다.

However, this silent-looking world under the sea is actually not silent.

하지만, 이 고요하게 보이는 바닷속 세상이 사실은 고요하지 않다.

This is because of all the noise that humans make.

이는 인간들이 만드는 온갖 소음 때문이다.

They sail boats across the sea and play water sports by the beach.

그들은 배를 타고 바다를 건너가고 해변에서 수상 스포츠를 한다.

Other noises are made when people drill deep into the sea floor looking for oil and gas.

사람들이 석유나 가스를 찾아 해저 깊이 구멍을 뚫을 때도 다른 소음이 만들어진다.

Some people even use special equipment that produces sound waves to find fish and other things underwater.

어떤 사람들은 물 속에서 물고기나 다른 사물을 찾기 위해 음파를 만들어내는 특별한 장치까지 사용한다.

All of these activities create loud noises in the water and harm the lives of many sea animals.

이러한 활동들은 모두 물 속에 시끄러운 소음을 만들어 많은 해양동물들의 삶을 해친다.

Like humans, sea animals need to communicate with one another.

인간과 마찬가지로 바다동물들은 서로 의사 소통을 할 필요가 있다.

They need to find food, mates, and their way around.

그들은 먹을 것과 친구, 그리고 길을 찾아야 한다.

But man-made noises disturb their signals.

하지만 인간이 만든 소음들이 이들의 신호를 방해한다.

The noises cause sea animals to get lost and to be unable to hear their prey coming or their mates calling.

소음은 바다동물들이 길을 잃고 사냥감이 다가오는 것이나 친구들이 부르는 소리를 들을 수 없게 만든다.

Some become injured or end up dying because their signals get confused.

몇몇은 신호가 교란되는 바람에 상처를 입거나 죽음에 이른다.

Unlike garbage and oil, underwater noise pollution cannot be seen.

쓰레기나 석유와 달리 해저 소음공해는 보이지 않는다.

But it’s obvious that we are harming ocean life.

하지만 우리가 바닷속 생명을 해치고 있음은 분명하다.

We must reduce noise pollution as soon as possible.

우리는 가능한 한 빨리 소음공해를 줄여야 한다.

If we don’t study the problem now and take action quickly, it will be too late.

이 문제를 지금 조사하여 빨리 행동을 취하지 않으면, 너무 늦어질 것이다.
