Sound doesn’t have a physical form, but we still hear it.

소리는 물리적인 형태를 갖고 있지 않지만, 우리는 여전히 소리를 듣는다.

How does this happen?

어떻게 이런 일이 일어날까?

When you hit something, the air molecules around it start to shake.

무언가를 치면, 그 주위의 공기분자가 흔들리기 시작한다.

These vibrating molecules then shake the other molecules nearby.

진동하는 이 분자들은 그 다음에 주변에 있는 다른 분자들을 흔든다.

The vibration is passed on like a wave.

진동은 파도처럼 전달된다.

When it reaches your ear, it causes tiny hairs inside to shake, too.

이것이 귀에 도달하면 그 안의 미세한 털도 흔들기 시작한다.

The nerves under the hairs sense this and send a message to your brain.

털 아래의 신경들이 이를 감지하여 뇌에 메시지를 보낸다.

Your brain reads this message as sound.

당신의 뇌는 이 메시지를 소리로 해석한다.

In order to travel, sound needs a medium.

소리는 이동하기 위해서 매개체를 필요로 한다.

This medium can be a solid, a liquid, or a gas.

이 매개체는 고체일 수도, 액체일 수도, 기체일 수도 있다.

This is why we can’t hear sound in outer space, where there is no air.

이것이 우리가 공기가 없는 대기권 밖에서 소리를 들을 수 없는 이유다.

Here is a simple experiment to show that sound needs a medium.

여기 소리가 매개체를 필요로 한다는 점을 보여주는 실험이 있다.

Find the objects listed above.

위에 열거된 물건을 찾아라.

Attach the small bell to the end of the stick.

작은 종을 막대 끝에 붙여라.

Then, attach the other end of the stick to the inside of the bottle cap.

그 다음에는 막대의 다른 쪽 끝을 병마개 안에 붙여라.

Put the cap on the bottle and shake it.

병마개를 닫고 병을 흔들어라.

Can you hear the bell ring?

종이 울리면 소리를 들을 수 있는가?

Now, remove the bottle cap from the bottle.

그럼, 병마개를 병에서 빼라.

Light a few matches and drop them into the bottle.

성냥 몇 개에 불을 붙여 병 안에 떨어뜨려라.

Quickly put the cap back on.

마개를 재빠르게 다시 닫아라.

Wait for the matches to burn out and the bottle to cool.

성냥불이 꺼지고 병이 식을 때까지 기다려라.

Shake the bottle again.

병을 다시 흔들어라.

The bell should sound softer or not be heard at all.

종은 더 조용한 소리가 나거나 아예 들리지 않을 것이다.
