Long ago, there were no rough winds or even gentle breezes.
오래 전엔 거친 바람도 없었고, 산들바람 조차도 없었습니다.
The world was completely still.
세상은 완전히 고요했습니다.
In a small village, there lived a couple who had no children.
한 작은 마을에 아이가 없는 부부가 살았습니다.
One day, the husband carved a wooden doll in the image of a boy.
하루는, 남편이 남자아이의 모습을 한 나무 인형을 조각했습니다.
That night, the doll miraculously came to life!
그날 밤, 그 인형은 기적적으로 살아 움직였습니다!
Excited, the husband and wife played with him before going to bed.
신이 나서 남편과 아내는 잠들기 전 그 인형과 함께 놀았습니다.
When the couple woke up, however, the doll was gone.
부부가 잠에서 깨어났을 때, 그 인형은 사라진 후였습니다.
Where did he go?

First, the doll traveled all the way to the east.
먼저, 그 인형은 동쪽 끝까지 갔습니다.
There he found a hole in the sky wall that was covered.
거기서 그는 하늘 벽에 가려져 있는 구멍을 발견했습니다.
Having wind will make this world livelier, he thought.
바람을 갖는 것이 이 세상을 더 생기 넘치게 만들 거야, 그는 생각했습니다.
He immediately uncovered the hole, letting in a powerful gust.

Once in a while, the wind brought a reindeer in.

He said to the wind, Sometimes blow hard, sometimes soft, and sometimes don’t blow at all.

Then the doll headed south and then west, and did the same thing.

A hot, moist wind rushed in from the south, while a strong west wind blew in rainstorms.
뜨겁고 습한 바람이 남쪽으로부터 몰려들어왔고, 강한 남쪽 바람은 폭풍우를 불러왔습니다.
Finally, the doll opened the hole in the north.
마지막으로, 그 인형은 북쪽에 있는 구멍을 열었습니다.
A freezing blast swept in with snow and ice.
차디찬 강한 바람이 눈과 얼음을 동반해서 휘몰아쳐 들어왔습니다.
Closing the hole quickly, he said, Come only in the middle of winter,
그 구멍을 재빨리 닫으면서, 그는 말했습니다, 한 겨울에만 나오렴,
so people can prepare for you.
그러면 사람들이 너를 대비해서 준비할 수 있어.
Satisfied with what he brought to the world, the doll returned home.

To honor him, the people started making dolls that looked just like him.
그를 존경하며, 사람들은 그와 똑같이 생긴 인형들을 만들기 시작했습니다.
The people believed dolls would bring happiness, and doll-making became one of their traditions.
그 사람들은 인형들이 행복을 가져온다고 믿었고, 인형 만들기는 그들의 전통의 하나가 되었습니다.
