Triangles are all around us.

삼각형은 우리 주변 도처에 있습니다.

We see them in sandwiches, slices of pizza, and road signs.

우리는 그것들을 샌드위치나 피자 조각, 그리고 도로 표지판에서 봅니다.

But how can you define triangles?

그렇지만 삼각형을 어떻게 정의할 수 있을까요?

A triangle has three sides and three angles.

삼각형은 세 개의 변과 세 개의 각을 가지고 있습니다.

This makes it the simplest polygon.

이것은 삼각형을 가장 단순한 다각형으로 만듭니다.

It has fewer sides and angles than any other polygon.

삼각형은 다른 어떤 다각형보다도 적은 수의 변과 각을 가지고 있습니다.

In addition, other polygons can be divided into triangles.

그뿐 아니라, 다른 다각형들은 삼각형들로 나뉘어질 수 있습니다.

For example, a rectangle can be split into two triangles.

예를 들어, 직사각형은 두 개의 삼각형으로 나뉠 수 있습니다.

Triangles have a few special properties.

삼각형은 몇 개의 특별한 특성을 갖고 있습니다.

First, look at the sides of a triangle.

먼저, 삼각형의 변들을 살펴봅시다.

Choose any two sides and add their lengths.

어느 두 변을 골라서 그것들의 길이를 더하여보세요.

The result will always be more than the length of the third side.

그 결과는 항상 세 번째 변의 길이보다 길 것입니다.

Another property of triangles is the relationship between the sizes of their angles and the length of their sides.

또 다른 삼각형의 특성으로는 그것들의 각의 크기와 변의 길이 사이의 관계입니다.

The side opposite the largest angle is always the longest.

가장 큰 각의 맞은 편에 있는 변이 항상 가장 깁니다.

The side opposite the smallest angle is always the shortest.

가장 작은 각의 맞은 편에 있는 변은 항상 가장 짧습니다.

In the triangle below, the largest angle is ∠B.

아래의 삼각형에서, 가장 큰 각은 ∠B입니다.

The opposite side, b, is the longest.

그 맞은편의 변, b는 가장 깁니다.

The smallest angle, ∠C, is opposite the shortest side, c.

가장 작은 각, ∠C는 가장 짧은 변, c의 맞은 편에 있습니다.

One more property of triangles is that the sum of the angles is always 180°.

삼각형의 또 하나의 특성은 그 각들의 합이 항상 180°라는 것입니다.

Make a triangle out of paper.

종이로 삼각형을 만들어보세요.

Label the angles A, B, and C.

그 각들을 A, B, C로 이름을 붙이세요.

Cut out the angles and put them together.

그 각들을 잘라내어 함께 모아 놓으세요.

The angles ∠A, ∠B, and ∠C will form a straight line.

그 각들 ∠A, ∠B, ∠C는 직선을 이룰 것입니다.

A straight line is 180°!

직선은 180°이지요!
