There is something all around you, but you can’t see it.

It’s air!

Air is a mixture of gases.

공기는 여러 기체의 혼합물입니다.

It’s invisible, but it’s made up of very tiny molecules.

이것은 보이지 않지만, 매우 작은 분자들로 이루어져 있습니다.

These molecules are spread out and are constantly in motion.

이 분자들은 넓은 공간을 차지하고 계속해서 움직입니다.

Air molecules move differently as the temperature changes.

공기 분자들은 온도가 변하면서 다르게 움직입니다.

When air gets warmer, the molecules become more active and move farther apart.

공기가 따뜻해지면, 분자들은 더 활발해지고 더 멀리 떨어집니다.

They also take up more space.

이들은 또한 더 많은 공간을 차지합니다.

However, when air gets cooler, the molecules move more slowly and come closer together.

그러나 공기가 차가워지면, 분자들은 더 천천히 움직이고 더 가까이 모입니다.

Cooler air molecules fill less space.

차가운 공기 분자는 적은 공간을 차지합니다.

Here is an experiment that shows this.

이것을 볼 수 있는 실험이 있습니다.

First, take a balloon and stretch it over the mouth of an empty bottle.

우선, 풍선을 준비하고 그것을 빈 병의 입구에 늘려서 씌웁니다.

Next, put it in hot water.

그 다음, 병을 뜨거운 물에 넣습니다.

Does the balloon swell up?

풍선이 부풀어 오르나요?

Now, move it into cold water.

You will see the balloon shrink.

When the air molecules heat up, they become more spread out.

This makes the air inside the bottle expand.

Thus, it moves out of the bottle and fills up the balloon.

However, when the molecules get colder, they move closer together.

그러나 공기 분자가 차가워지면, 이들은 서로 가까이 모입니다.

So, the air goes back into the bottle.
