Plants may not have mouths, but they still need to eat to survive.

식물들은 입은 없을 지 모르지만, 생존을 위해서는 여전히 먹어야 합니다.

Many scientists wondered how plants survived.

많은 과학자들은 식물이 어떻게 생존하는지 궁금해했습니다.

After years of research, we now know that plants create their own food.

다년간의 연구 이후에, 이제 우리는 식물들은 그들 자신의 음식을 만들어낸다는 것을 압니다.

In the past, people thought plants ate soil.

과거에, 사람들은 식물이 흙을 먹는다고 생각했습니다.

One scientist, Jan Baptist van Helmont, was suspicious of this, so he conducted an experiment.

한 과학자, 얀 밥티스타 판 헬몬트는 이것이 의심스러워서 실험을 해보았습니다.

He weighed a tree and some dry soil.

그는 나무와 마른 흙 약간의 무게를 재었습니다.

Then, he planted the tree in the soil and watered it.

Five years later, he weighed the tree and soil again.

Though the tree was heavier than before, the weight of the soil was almost the same.

Van Helmont concluded that plants survive by drinking water.

판 헬몬트는 식물들이 물을 마시는 것으로 생존한다고 결론지었습니다.

While that wasn’t the whole answer, van Helmont was partially correct.

그것이 완전한 답은 아니지만, 판 헬몬트는 부분적으로 옳았습니다.

Since van Helmont’s observation, scientists have discovered that plants need three things: water, carbon dioxide, and sunlight.

판 헬몬트의 관찰 이래로, 과학자들은 식물이 물, 이산화탄소, 그리고 햇빛의 세가지를 필요로 한다는 것을 발견했습니다.

They use these to make food through a process called photosynthesis.

식물들은 광합성이라고 불리는 과정을 통해 음식을 만드는데 이것들을 사용합니다.

Photosynthesis begins when a plant breathes in carbon dioxide through tiny holes on its leaves.

광합성은 식물이 그것의 잎에 있는 미세한 구멍들을 통해 이산화탄소를 들이마실 때 시작됩니다.

At the same time, the roots absorb water.

이와 동시에, 뿌리는 물을 흡수합니다.

Traveling from the roots to the stems, the water reaches the leaves.

물은 뿌리에서부터 줄기까지 이동하면서 잎에 다다릅니다.

Then the leaves use the energy from sunlight to turn carbon dioxide and water into a kind of sugar.

그리고 나서 그 잎들은 햇빛에서 얻은 에너지를 사용해서 이산화탄소와 물을 당의 한 종류로 변화시킵니다.

This sugar is what the plant needs to grow.

이 당분은 식물이 자라는데 필요로 하는 것입니다.

During photosynthesis, the plant releases oxygen, a gas humans need to survive.

광합성을 하는 동안에, 식물은 사람이 생존하는데 필요한 가스인 산소를 배출합니다.
