In European history, there was a special period after the Middle Ages.

유럽 역사에는 중세시대 후에 아주 특별한 시기가 있었습니다.

It’s called the Renaissance.

그 시기는 르네상스라고 불립니다.

During this time, brilliant artists such as Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo created great pieces of art.

이 시기에, 레오나르도 다빈치와 미켈란젤로 같은 위대한 예술가들이 훌륭한 예술 작품들을 만들었습니다.

These artists had one common interest—the human body.

이 예술가들은 한 가지 공통 관심사가 있었습니다. 바로 인체입니다.

In the Middle Ages, the church was powerful
in society.

중세시대에, 교회는 사회에서 막강했습니다.

It regarded ordinary people as less important than God.

교회는 보통 사람들을 신보다 덜 중요하다고 여겼습니다.

This way of thinking influenced nearly everything, including art.

Thus, artists paid little attention to the details of the human body.

When they painted humans, the images often did not look natural.

However, things were about to change.

back and studied ancient Greece and Rome.

They began to think highly of humans, as the ancient Greeks and Romans did.

This was the beginning of the Renaissance.

Renaissance artists started focusing on the human form.

They wanted to create realistic images of the human body.

So, they hired models to observe the body more closely.

They even dissected bodies to study them.

As a result, the humans in their masterpieces look lifelike even today.
