Why do people save their money in banks?

Why not keep it at home?

First of all, thieves might break into your house and steal your money.

우선, 도둑이 집에 들어와 돈을 훔쳐갈지도 모른다.

Banks, though, have alarms and guards to protect it.

하지만 은행에는 돈을 지킬 경보장치와 경비원이 있다.

Another reason is that your money can grow in the bank.

다른 이유는 당신의 돈이 은행에서 불어날 수 있다는 점이다.

When you put money in a savings account, the bank pays you some extra money each month.

돈을 저축계좌에 넣어두면, 은행은 당신에게 매달 소정의 추가 금액을 지불한다.

The money you put in is called a deposit.

당신이 넣어두는 돈은 예금이라 불린다.

The money the bank pays you for your deposit is the interest.

은행이 당신의 예금에 대해 지불하는 돈은 이자다.

The interest you earn depends on the interest rate.

당신이 버는 이자는 금리에 달려 있다.

Let’s say you deposited $1,000 in the bank and the interest rate is 2% a year.

In that case, you will earn $20 a year as interest.

Why would banks protect your money and still pay you interest?

The reason is that banks take your deposit and lend it to other people.

그 이유는 은행이 당신의 예금을 가지고 다른 사람들에게 빌려준다는 데 있다.

When people buy expensive things such as houses or cars, or run a business, they need a lot of money.

사람들이 주택이나 자동차같이 비싼 물건을 사거나 사업을 운영할 때는, 많은 돈이 필요하다.

When they don’t have enough, they borrow from banks.

그들이 돈을 충분히 갖고 있지 않을 때는, 은행에서 빌린다.

This money is called a loan.

이 돈은 대출이라고 불린다.

After that, they pay back the money in small amounts each month for several years.

그 뒤에, 그들은 여러 해 동안 매달 적은 액수로 그 돈을 갚는다.

They also have to pay interest.

그들은 이자도 지불해야 한다.

This interest is much higher than the interest banks pay for deposits.

이 이자는 은행이 예금에 대해 지불하는 이자보다 훨씬 많다.

This is one way banks make money.

이는 은행이 돈을 버는 한 가지 방법이다.

The bank needs deposits so that it can make money by lending money.

To encourage people to keep their money in the bank, it pays them interest.
