When you see colors, some feelings or images may
come to mind.

색깔을 보면, 어떤 감정이나 이미지가 마음에 떠오르기도 한다.

You may think of nature, danger, good luck, or bad luck.

자연, 위험, 행운, 악운이 마음에 떠오르기도 한다.

For cultures around the world, colors are symbols.

세계 각지의 문화에서 색깔들은 상징이다.

Their meanings, though, are not the same in each culture.

하지만 그 의미는 문화마다 같지 않다.

For the Chinese, some colors have a special meaning.

중국인들에게 몇 가지 색깔들은 특별한 의미를 갖고 있다.

It’s well known that they think of red as good luck, but what about the other colors?

그들이 빨강을 행운으로 생각한다는 점은 잘 알려져 있지만, 다른 색깔들은 어떨까?

The Chinese believed that black was the color of the heavens, because they noticed that the northern sky was often strangely black.

중국인들은 검정을 하늘의 색깔이라 믿었는데, 북쪽 하늘이 종종 이상하게도 검정색임을 보았기 때문이다.

This old belief became a saying: “heaven and earth of mysterious black.

이 오랜 믿음은 "신비스러운 검정색의 천지(天玄地黃)"라는 성어가 되었다.

Red was the color of good fortune and joy.

빨강은 행운과 기쁨의 색깔이었다.

Therefore, it was seen everywhere during celebrations such as weddings, birthdays, and the New Year.

따라서, 빨강은 결혼식이나 생일, 설날 같은 잔치 때면 사방에서 볼 수 있었다.

People gave money as gifts in red envelopes as well.

사람들은 돈도 빨강 봉투에 넣어 선물로 주었다.

Green was the color of spring, and it represented
energy and strength.

초록은 봄의 색깔로, 활기와 힘을 나타냈다.

White was a symbol of brightness and purity.

흰색은 밝음과 순수의 상징이었다.

It also symbolized death, so people wore white when loved ones died.

흰색은 죽음을 상징하기도 했기 때문에, 사람들은 사랑하는 사람들이 죽었을 때 흰 옷을 입었다.

Yellow was considered to be the most beautiful color.

노랑은 가장 아름다운 색깔로 여겨졌다.

As it was a symbol of the earth’s rulers, the Chinese kings wore yellow and lived under yellow roofs.

노랑이 지상의 지배자의 상징이었기 때문에, 중국의 왕들은 노란 옷을 입고 노란 지붕 아래 살았다.

Some of these beliefs remain to this day, and the Chinese continue to follow them.

이 믿음들 중 일부는 오늘날까지 남아 있고, 중국인들은 여전히 이를 따른다.
