Why do doctors wear green gowns instead of white coats during surgery?

왜 의사들은 수술하는 동안 흰색 수술복 대신 녹색 수술복을 입을까?

There is actually a scientific reason.

거기에는 사실 과학적인 이유가 있다.

Our eyes’ retina is made up of two types of receptor cells — rods and cones.

우리 눈의 망막은 간상체와 추상체라는 두 가지 수용체 세포로 구성되어 있다.

Rods are sensitive to weak light and can sense low levels of light.

간상체는 약한 빛에 민감하고, 낮은 단계의 빛을 감지할 수 있다.

Cones are sensitive to stronger light and can interpret color.

추상체는 더 강한 빛에 민감하고, 색깔을 감지할 수 있다.

But cones get fatigued from looking at strong colors for a long time.

그러나 오랫동안 강한 색들을 보고 있으면 추상체가 피로해진다.

When fatigued cones see a white surface, they are left with an afterimage.

피로해진 추상체가 하얀 표면을 보면, 잔상이 남게 된다.

An afterimage refers to the complementary color that you sometimes see after you look away from a strong color.

잔상이란 당신이 강한 색에서 눈길을 돌렸을 때 때때로 보게 되는 보색을 말한다.

Medical surgeries are normally accompanied by bleeding.

의학적인 수술은 대개 출혈을 동반한다.

When doctors look at red blood for a long time, their cones become fatigued.

의사들이 오랜 시간 동안 붉은 피를 보면, 그들의 추상체가 피로해진다.

So if they look at other doctors wearing white coats, they see a green afterimage, as green is the complementary color of red.

그래서 만약 그들이 흰색 수술복을 입고 있는 다른 의사들을 보면, 그들은 녹색 잔상을 보게 되는데, 이는 녹색이 빨간색의 보색이기 때문이다.

This afterimage confuses the doctors’ vision and lowers their concentration.
