Although it has books that people can borrow, just like any other library, the “Camel Library” is one-of-a-kind.

It brings books to villages on the backs of camels!

In the past, distant villages in northern Kenya had little or no access to books.

There were no libraries nearby, and people could not travel to far-off libraries in cities.

근처에 도서관이 없었고, 사람들은 도시의 멀리 떨어진 도서관으로 갈 수도 없었다.

You might think that trucks or cars would be better than camels for a mobile library, but not in Kenya.

당신은 낙타보다는 트럭이나 자동차가 이동도서관으로 더 낫다고 생각할지도 모르지만, 케냐에서는 그렇지 않다.

Poorly maintained roads make transportation by vehicle very difficult, so camels are more reliable and better suited to the local conditions.

열악하게 정비된 도로들이 자동차로 통행하는 것을 매우 힘들게 만들어서, 낙타가 더 믿을 만하고 그 지역의 상황에 더 적합하다.

Camels are very strong and can go for a long time without water.

낙타는 매우 힘이 세고 오랫동안 물 없이도 이동할 수 있다.

Recently, the Camel Library had 12 camels that worked from Monday to Thursday and carried about 7,000 books to 12 different sites.

최근에 낙타 도서관에는 월요일부터 목요일까지 일하며 열두 개의 다른 지역으로 약 7,000권의 책을 운반하는 낙타가 열두 마리 있었다.

The library visits each village once every two weeks, spending an entire day there.

도서관은 각 마을을 2주에 한 번씩 방문하며, 그곳에서 온종일을 보낸다.

Villagers can borrow books to read and return them the next time the Camel Library arrives.

마을 사람들은 읽을 책을 빌리고 다음번에 낙타 도서관이 도착하면 책을 반납하면 된다.

Even though the people of Kenya speak Swahili, most of the books are in English.

케냐 사람들은 스와힐리어를 사용하지만, 대부분의 책은 영어로 되어 있다.

Despite this, many people borrow books from the Camel Library.

이 점에도 불구하고, 많은 사람들은 낙타 도서관에서 책을 빌린다.

That’s because it is their only source of new reading material.

이는 그것이 새로운 읽을거리의 유일한 공급원이기 때문이다.
