Unless you work as a clothing designer, you’ve probably never noticed that women’s and men’s shirts button from opposite sides.

만약 당신이 의상 디자이너로 일하는 것이 아니라면 여성용과 남성용 셔츠가 반대쪽에서 단추를 잠그게 되어 있다는 것을 아마 알아채지 못했을 것이다.

If most women were left handed and most men were right handed, this would seem logical.

But most people are right handed.

So why are men’s and women’s buttons on opposite sides?

It’s because of the history of fashion.

A few hundred years ago, both women and men in Europe wore a lot more clothes than they do today.

Men wore shirts, vests, pants, and coats.

But women had far more complicated outfits, which included petticoats, bloomers, gowns, corsets, and bustles.

In middle and upper-class homes, men usually dressed themselves, since it was relatively easy for them to put on their clothing.

But for women, things were not that simple; they needed to be dressed by their maids.

Tailors soon realized that designing women’s clothes with buttons on the left side made this process faster and easier.

Thus, a custom was created in clothes-making.

However, the clothing industry continues to follow this tradition.

Since few people notice or complain, no one has bothered to change it.
