Although most of Europe had embraced the habit of drinking coffee by the 17th century, it wasn’t until the second half of the 18th century that it was accepted in Germany.
Before that time, many Germans, who distrusted foreign influences on their culture, saw coffee as a threat to their preferred local drink, beer.
As a result, there were laws and taxes designed to discourage coffee drinking.
In 1732, the legendary composer Johann Sebastian Bach became involved in these “coffee wars” with his Coffee Cantata.
It was a comical operetta about a traditional father and his modern, coffee-drinking daughter.
He tries to break her habit by telling her that she has to choose between getting married and drinking coffee.
Despite this threat, she sings “Ah, how sweet coffee tastes — lovelier than a thousand kisses, far sweeter than muscatel.”
But as much as she loves coffee, the daughter does not want to go through life unmarried.
Therefore, she agrees to stop drinking coffee.
However, she secretly explains to the men her father introduces that she won’t marry anyone who tries to keep her away from coffee.
The Coffee Cantata, which was originally performed at a popular German coffee shop, had a simple message for its audiences: there’s nothing wrong with drinking coffee.
By telling a tale that pointed out the generational differences of the time in a humorous way, Bach’s work amused and entertained both coffee-loving and coffee-hating Germans.
