Here’s an interesting experiment.

여기 한 흥미로운 실험이 있다.

Some scientists place 12 monkeys in a room.

몇몇 과학자들이 원숭이 열두 마리를 한 방에 둔다.

The scientists tie a bunch of bananas on the top of a tall pole to attract the monkeys.

과학자들은 원숭이들을 유인하기 위해 바나나 한 다발을 높은 기둥 꼭대기에 매단다.

Just above the bananas, they conceal a showerhead in the ceiling.

그들은 그 바나나 바로 위쪽 천장에 샤워 꼭지를 숨겨 둔다.

Each time the monkeys try to get the bananas, the scientists turn on the shower and spray them with cold water.

원숭이들이 바나나를 잡으려 할 때마다, 과학자들은 샤워기를 틀어 원숭이들에게 차가운 물을 뿌린다.

The wet monkeys scream and jump down, refraining from attempting to grab the bananas.

물에 젖은 원숭이들은 바나나를 잡으려는 시도를 그만두고 소리를 지르며 뛰어내린다.

Next, the scientists remove the showerhead.

그 다음, 과학자들은 샤워 꼭지를 치운다.

They also take one of the monkeys out of the room, replacing it with another one.

또한, 그들은 원숭이 중 한 마리를 방 밖으로 데리고 나가 다른 원숭이로 바꾼다.

When the new monkey attempts to climb the pole to get the bananas, the other monkeys pull it back, screaming and pointing to the ceiling.

새로 온 원숭이가 바나나를 가지러 기둥을 오르려고 하자, 나머지 원숭이들이 소리를 지르고 천장을 가리키면서 그 원숭이를 잡아당긴다.

The scientists replace all twelve of the original monkeys, one by one, in the room.

과학자들은 방에 원래 있었던 원숭이 열두 마리 전부를 차례차례 다른 원숭이로 교체한다.

Although none of the new monkeys have been sprayed by the water, they all refuse to climb the pole to reach the bananas at the top.

새로 온 원숭이 중 아무도 물을 맞은 적이 없었음에도 불구하고, 그들은 모두 꼭대기에 있는 바나나를 가지러기둥에 올라가려 하지 않는다.

This experiment can teach us an important lesson.

이 실험은 우리에게 중요한 교훈을 가르쳐 줄 수 있다.

The new monkeys don’t climb up because no other monkeys do it.

다른 원숭이들이 아무도 오르지 않기 때문에 새로 온 원숭이들도 오르지 않는다.

Lots of people act similarly.

많은 사람들이 비슷하게 행동한다.

Without examining why, they give up on their goals and follow the way that things have been done before.

이유는 생각해보지 않은 채, 사람들은 자신들의 목표를 포기해 버리고, 일들이 이전에 행해지던 방식을 따른다.
