Dreams can be fun, exciting, or even scary.

꿈은 재미있거나, 신이 나거나, 심지어는 무서울 수도 있다.

Most of the time we can’t control them at all.

대체로 우리는 꿈을 전혀 통제할 수 없다.

But sometimes we have special dreams.

그러나 가끔 우리는 특별한 꿈을 꾼다.

Not only do we realize that we are dreaming, but we can also control what happens!

우리가 꿈을 꾸는 중이라는 것을 깨달을 뿐만 아니라, 일어나고 있는 일을 통제할 수도 있다!

These are called “lucid dreams.”

이런 꿈들은 ‘자각몽’이라고 불린다.

Normally, when we dream, we are no longer self-aware.

보통은, 우리는 꿈을 꿀 때 더 이상 자신을 인식하지 않는다.

But in a lucid dream, it is as if the brain wakes up while we are dreaming.

그러나 자각몽에서는, 꿈을 꾸는 동안 마치 두뇌가 깨어나는 것 같다.

This allows us to move around and explore our dream environment as though we were completely awake.

이것은 마치 우리가 완전히 깨어 있는 상태인 것처럼 꿈속 환경을 돌아다니고 탐험할 수 있게 해준다.

What’s more, normal dreams usually fade as soon as we wake up.

게다가, 보통의 꿈은 잠에서 깨자마자 대개 서서히 사라진다.

So we can only remember them for a short time.

따라서 우리는 꿈을 잠시 동안만 기억할 수 있을 뿐이다.

But lucid dreams can be remembered long after we have woken up!

그러나 자각몽은 우리가 잠을 깬 한참 뒤에도 기억될 수 있다!

However, there are some problems with lucid dreams.

그러나 자각몽에는 몇 가지 문제점들이 있다.

First of all, they can be exhausting.

우선, 자각몽은 우리를 기진맥진하게 만들 수 있다.

They interrupt normal sleep patterns, preventing us from getting enough rest.

자각몽은 정상적인 수면 패턴을 방해해 우리가 충분한 휴식을 취하는 것을 막는다.

Also, they can be addictive.

또한, 자각몽은 중독성이 있기도 하다.

But there are some people who believe that lucid dreams are more than just an interesting experience.

하지만 자각몽을 그저 흥미로운 경험 이상으로 여기는 사람들도 있다.

They say these dreams can lead to personal development.

그들은 자각몽이 개인의 발전으로 이어질 수 있다고 말한다.

People can use them to gain confidence and overcome their fears.

사람들은 자각몽을 자신감을 얻고 두려움을 극복하는 데에 이용할 수 있다.

If there’s something they’re afraid to try in real life, they can experience it in their dreams instead!

실제 삶에서 해 보기 두려워하는 무언가가 있다면, 대신 꿈속에서 그것을 경험할 수 있는 것이다!
