Your legs tremble and your palms sweat as you walk.

You are climbing to Xuan Kong Si, also called the Hanging Temple, in China.

당신은 ‘매달려 있는 절’이라고도 불리는, 중국의 현공사로 올라가고 있다.

The temple is famous for its location.

이 절은 절이 위치한 장소로 유명하다.

It is built into a cliff, more than 75 meters above the ground.

그것은 땅에서 75미터 넘게 떨어진 절벽에 지어져 있다.

It looks very fragile.

절은 매우 약해 보인다.

But surprisingly, the Hanging Temple has been “hanging” there for about 1,500 years!

하지만 놀랍게도, 현공사는 그곳에 약 1500년 동안 ‘매달려’ 있었다!

The secret is in its unique building design.

비밀은 그 절의 독특한 건물 설계에 있다.

Its long, thin wooden poles were built into the rock as the foundation.

They seem to support the structure.

그 기둥들이 건축물을 떠받치고 있는 것처럼 보인다.

But it was actually constructed in a way that lets the rock in back carry most of the weight.

The temple is not only special outside.

그 절은 단지 외관만 특별한 것은 아니다.

The inside is also unique.

It is a place for three different traditional religions: Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism.

이 절은 불교, 도교, 유교라는 세 가지 각기 다른 전통적인 종교를 위한 공간이다.

The temple includes forty chambers connected by narrow stairs and bridges.

절에는 좁은 계단과 다리들로 연결된 40개의 방이 있다.

There are eighty-seven statues from all three religions inside as well.

내부에는 또한 세 종교의 인물상 87개도 있다.

Why do you think the temple was built like this?

이 절이 왜 이렇게 지어졌다고 생각하는가?

One reason is that the location protects the temple from the nearby river’s floods.

한 가지 이유는 그 위치가 절을 근처 강의 범람으로부터 보호해준다는 것이다.

The other reason is spiritual.

다른 이유는 영적인 것이다.

The quiet location is ideal for meditating and searching for inner peace.

절의 조용한 위치는 명상을 하고 내면의 평화를 찾는 데 이상적이다.

Ironically, the temple is now a busy tourist attraction.

얄궂게도, 이 절은 현재 붐비는 관광 명소이다.
