The popcorn variety is special because its kernels have a hard outer layer that water and other materials can't pass through.

There is a little water inside each kernel, and when the kernels are heated up, this water eventually turns into steam.

Finally, when the temperature and pressure get to a certain point, the kernels explode with a popping sound, turning themselves inside out.
