What color are carrots?

당근은 무슨 색인가?

Ask ten people and they'll all most likely give you the same answer: orange.

열 명에게 물어보라. 그러면 그들은 아마 주황색이라는 모두 똑같은 대답을 할 것이다.

But if you had asked people the same question before the 17th century, they probably would have said "purple."

그러나 당신이 17세기 이전에 사람들에게 같은 질문을 했다면, 그들은 아마도 ‘보라색’이라고 했을 것이다.

This is because modern carrots were not cultivated until the late 16th century, when Dutch farmers created them through cross-breeding.

이것은 오늘날의 당근이 16세기 후반이 되어서야 비로소 재배되었기 때문인데, 그때 네덜란드 농부들이 품종간 교배를 통해 그것들을 만들어냈다.

Before that time, most carrots were purple.

There were a few, however, that were yellow or white.

These mutations lacked the purple pigment found in other carrots.

이 변종들은 다른 당근에서 발견되는 보라색 색소가 없었다.

Modern day orange carrots are a cross of these two types of mutations, along with some species of wild carrots.

오늘날의 주황색 당근은 몇 가지 야생 당근 종과 더불어 이 두 가지 종류의 변종들의 교배종이다.

No one is sure exactly why orange carrots became so much more popular than traditional purple ones.

아무도 왜 주황색 당근이 전통적인 보라색 당근보다 훨씬 더 인기 있게 되었는지 정확히 모른다.

Some believe that people in the Netherlands preferred them because orange is the color of the Dutch royal family.

일부 사람들은 주황색이 네덜란드 왕실의 색깔이기 때문에 네덜란드 사람들이 그것들을 선호했다고 믿는다.

However, others believe the real reason is a more practical one ― orange carrots are simply sweeter and bigger than purple ones.
