Do you like food fights?

Then you should visit the northern Italian town of Ivrea.

The people there have a very strange tradition.

Every February, they throw rotten oranges at each other.

It's part of a three-day festival known as Battaglia delle Arance, or "battle of the oranges" in English.

The origins of the festival are from the 12th century.

According to legend, an evil lord wanted to marry a miller's daughter, but she resisted.

The other villagers came to her aid, throwing rocks at the lord's castle.

This fight is recreated annually, with oranges replacing the rocks.

More than 50,000 crates of rotten oranges are shipped to the town from Sicily each year.

People are then divided into different teams ― some are the lord's guards and others are villagers.

The "guards" ride around in horse-drawn carriages and the "villagers" are on foot.

Each day of the festival, different teams battle.

It may sound dangerous, but because the oranges are rotten, they are quite soft.

The worst injury anyone has ever suffered was a black eye.
