Picture yourself lost in the desert.

사막에서 길을 잃은 당신의 모습을 상상해 보아라.

The sun is hot, and the air feels like an oven.

태양은 뜨겁고, 공기는 오븐처럼 느껴진다.

Worst of all, you have no water!

무엇보다 나쁜 것은, 당신에게 물이 없다!

Unless you find water soon, you could die.

당신이 곧 물을 발견하지 않는다면, 당신은 죽을 수도 있다.

Here is a survival strategy you could try in order to create water in such a hopeless situation.

여기 그러한 절망적인 상황에서 물을 만들기 위해 당신이 시도해 볼 수 있는 생존 전략이 있다.

Dig a hole about 3 feet deep and 4 feet wide in a sunny spot.

해가 드는 지점에 깊이가 3피트, 너비가 4피트 정도 되도록 구덩이를 파라.

Take a cup and put it in the middle of the hole.

컵을 하나 가져다 구덩이의 한가운데 놓아라.

Use a plastic bag to cover the hole.

구덩이를 덮기 위해 비닐봉지를 이용해라.

Then place rocks around the edges to keep it secure.

그러고 나서 비닐봉지를 안전하게 유지하기 위해 가장자리에 돌들을 올려놓아라.

Place a pebble in the middle of the bag so it is pushed slightly inward.

작은 돌 하나를 봉지 한가운데에 놓아서 봉지가 살짝 안쪽으로 눌리게 하라.

The bag should be a few inches above the cup.

그 봉지는 컵 위로 몇 인치 떨어져 있어야만 한다.

Cover the bag's edges with sand to make sure moisture cannot escape from the hole.

봉지 가장자리를 모래로 덮어서 습기가 구덩이로부터 빠져나가지 못하게 하라.

As the sun draws moisture from the soil, the moisture will get trapped under the bag and drip into your cup.

태양이 토양으로부터 수분을 빨아들이면서, 그 수분은 봉지 아래에 모여 컵 안으로 맺혀 떨어질 것이다.

This survival strategy should only be used for emergencies.

이 생존 전략은 오직 비상시에만 사용되어야 한다.

Always carry plenty of water in the desert.
