My name is Kim Nam Jun, also known as RM, the leader of group BTS.
제 이름은 김남준이며 방탄소년단의 리더 RM으로 알려져 있습니다.
It is an incredible honor to be invited to an occasion with such significance for today's young generation.
오늘날의 젊은 세대들을 위한 의미 있는 자리에 초대되어 대단히 영광입니다.
Last November, BTS launched the LOVE MYSELF Campaign with UNICEF built on our belief that true love first begins with loving myself.
작년 11월 방탄소년단은 진정한 사랑은 나 자신을 사랑하는 것에서부터 시작한다는 믿음을 바탕으로 유니세프와 함께 Love Myself 캠페인을 시작했습니다.
We've been partnering with UNICEF's End Violence program to protect children and young people all over the world from violence.
우리는 전 세계 아이들과 청소년을 폭력으로부터 보호하기 위한 유니세프의 End Violence (폭력 근절) 프로그램에 참여해오고 있습니다.
And our fans have become a major part of this campaign with their action and with their enthusiasm.
그리고 우리 팬들은 행동과 열정으로 이 캠페인의 주역이 되었습니다.
We truly have the best fans in the world.
우리는 진정 세계 최고의 팬들을 가졌습니다.
And I'd like to begin by talking about myself.
저에 대한 이야기로 시작하고자 합니다.
I was born in Ilsan, a city near Seoul, South Korea.
저는 서울 근처에 있는 일산이라는 도시에서 태어났습니다.
It is a really beautiful place with a lake, hills, and even an annual flower festival.
그곳은 호수와 산이 있고, 해마다 꽃 축제가 열리는 정말 아름다운 곳입니다.
I spent a very happy childhood there, and I was just an ordinary boy.
저는 그곳에서 정말 행복한 어린 시절을 보냈고 아주 평범한 소년이었습니다.
I used to look up at the night sky and wonder, and I used to dream the dreams of a boy.
저는 밤하늘을 보며 놀라워했었고, 소년이 가질 법한 꿈을 꾸곤 했습니다.
I used to imagine that I was a superhero who could save the world.
저 자신이 세상을 구하는 영웅이 되는 상상을 하곤 했습니다.
And in an intro to one of our early albums, there is a line that says, "My heart stopped when I was maybe 9 or 10."
저희의 초기 앨범 인트로 중에 이런 가사 구절이 있습니다. "내가 아홉, 열 살쯤 내 심장이 멈췄다."
Looking back, I think that's when I began to worry about what other people thought of me and started seeing myself through their eyes.
돌이켜보면, 그때가 다른 사람들이 나를 어떻게 보는지에 대해 걱정하기 시작하고, 그들의 눈을 통해 저 자신을 보기 시작했던 때였던 것 같습니다.
I stopped looking up at the night skies, the stars, I stopped daydreaming.
저는 밤하늘과 별을 바라보는 것을 멈췄고, 꿈을 꾸는 것을 멈췄습니다.
Instead, I just tried to jam myself into the molds that other people made.
대신에 다른 사람들이 만들어 놓은 틀에 저를 끼워 맞추려고 노력했습니다.
Soon, I began to shut out my own voice, and then started to listen to the voice of others.
곧 저는 저 자신의 목소리를 내는 것을 멈췄고, 다른 사람들의 목소리를 듣기 시작했습니다.
No one called out my name, and neither did I.
그 누구도 제 이름을 불러주지 않았습니다. 저 자신도 그랬습니다.
My heart stopped, and my eyes closed shut.
제 심장은 멈췄고, 제 눈은 감겼습니다.
So, like this, I, we all lost our names.
그렇게 저는, 우리는 이름을 잃어 버렸습니다.
We became like ghosts.
우리는 유령처럼 되었습니다.
But I had one sanctuary and that was music.
하지만 제게는 하나의 안식처가 있었습니다. 바로 음악이었습니다.
There was a small voice inside of me that said, "Wake up, man, and listen to yourself."
제 안의 작은 목소리가 말했습니다. "일어나, 네 자신의 목소리를 들어."
But it took me quite a long time to hear music calling my real name.
하지만 음악이 저의 진짜 이름을 부르는 소릴 듣기까지 꽤 오랜 시간이 걸렸습니다.
Even after the decision to join BTS, there were a lot of hurdles.
막상 방탄소년단에 들어가기로 결정한 이후에도 많은 난관들이 있었습니다.
Some people might not believe that, but most people thought we were hopeless, and sometimes I just wanted to quit.
몇몇 분들은 믿지 않으실지 모르지만, 대다수의 사람들은 우리가 희망이 없다고 생각했고 저는 때때로 그저 포기하고 싶었습니다.
But I think I was very lucky that I didn't give it all up.
하지만 모든 것을 포기하지 않았다는 것에 정말 행운이었다고 여깁니다.
And I'm sure that I and we will keep stumbling and failing like this.
그리고 저는 제가 그리고 우리가 이처럼 계속해서 휘청거리고 넘어질 것이라고 확신합니다.
BTS has become artists performing in those huge stadiums and selling millions of albums right now, but I am still an ordinary 24-year-old guy.
방탄소년단은 지금 대형 공연장에서 공연하고 수백만 장의 티켓을 파는 아티스트가 되었지만, 저는 여전히 스물 네 살의 평범한 청년일 뿐입니다.
If there's anything that I've achieved, it was only possible because I have my other BTS members right by my side,
제가 성취한 것이 있다면, 그 모든 것은 바로 곁에 다른 방탄소년단 멤버들이 있어주었고,
and because of the love and the support that our army of fans all over the world gives us.
전 세계에 있는 저희 팬, 아미 여러분이 저희를 위해 사랑과 성원을 보내주었기 때문에 가능하였습니다.
And maybe I made a mistake yesterday, but yesterday's me is still me.
저는 어제도 실수를 했을지도 모릅니다. 하지만 어제의 저도 여전히 저입니다.
Today, I am who I am with all of my faults and my mistakes.
오늘의 부족하고 실수하는 저도 역시 저 입니다.
Tomorrow, I might be a tiny bit wiser, and that would be me, too.
내일, 저는 지금보다 조금 더 현명할지도 모릅니다. 이 또한 저입니다.
These faults and mistakes are what I am, making up the brightest stars in the constellation of my life.
이런 실수와 잘못들 모두 저 자신이고, 제 삶의 별자리의 가장 밝은 별들을 만들어가는 것입니다.
I have come to love myself for who I am, for who I was, and for who I hope to become.
저는 지금 있는 그대로의 나, 과거의 나, 그리고 제가 바라는 나 이 모두를 사랑하게 되었습니다.
I‘d like to say the one last thing.
마지막으로 한 가지 말씀 드리고 싶습니다.
After releasing our LOVE YOURSELF albums and launching the LOVE MYSELF Campaign,
LOVE YOURSELF 앨범을 발매하고, LOVE MYSELF 캠페인을 시작한 이후,
we started to hear remarkable stories from our fans all over the world how our message helped them overcome their hardships in life and start loving themselves.
우리는 전 세계의 팬들로부터 믿지 못할 이야기들을 듣게 되었습니다. 어떻게 우리의 메시지가 그들의 삶의 어려움을 극복하고 그들 자신을 사랑하는데 도움이 되었는지 말이죠.
Those stories constantly remind us of our responsibility.
이 이야기들은 저희에게 계속 책임감을 일깨워줍니다.
So let's all take one more step.
그러니 한 발짝 더 나아가봅시다.
We have learned to love ourselves, so now I urge you to speak yourself.

Like most people, I've made many and plenty of mistakes in my life.
다른 많은 사람처럼 저도 제 인생에서 수많은 실수를 했습니다.
I have many faults, and I have many more fears,
저는 많은 단점을 가지고 있고, 그보다 더 많은 두려움도 가지고 있습니다.
but I'm going to embrace myself as hard as I can.
하지만 저는 제가 할 수 있는 만큼 제 자신을 끌어안고
And I'm starting to love myself gradually, little by little.
천천히 그저 조금씩 더 제 자신을 사랑하려 합니다.
