On April 25th, 1974, in Lisbon, Portugal, military officers launched a coup that overthrew the ruling dictatorship and set the country on a path to democratization.
This event became known as the Carnation Revolution after citizens gave soldiers carnations to place on their uniforms and in the muzzles of their rifles in celebration of the nearly bloodless coup.
Soon after the revolution, Portugal relinquished its control over its African colonies and moved to end its rule in East Timor, though the latter’s transition was disrupted by Indonesia’s invasion in 1975.
One year after the Carnation Revolution, Portugal experienced a democratic breakthrough in the form of the country’s first free election in fifty years.
Though no one could have realized the full significance of the event at the time, the Carnation Revolution is now regarded as the event that triggered the “third wave” of democratization, resulting in a dramatic increase in the number of democratic governments around the world.
