Although many moments contribute to an experience, only the most intense point and the final stage tend to factor into how we evaluate it.
This tendency is known as the peak-end rule.
For instance, a long vacation that includes a brief but highly enjoyable activity may be remembered more positively than a uniformly pleasant one, even if the latter was objectively better overall.
Psychologists suggest that this bias, along with several other memory distortions, arises partly from selective recall, since recent or particularly intense moments are more likely to be retrieved.
When individuals are later asked to recall how they felt, they tend to focus on these highlights rather than the full sequence of events.
Therefore, people may prefer a longer experience with a better ending over a shorter, more pleasant one with an unsatisfactory ending, even though the total discomfort of the former exceeds that of the latter.
